Financial Aid/Scholarships for Study Abroad Programs
If you receive Financial Aid you may use it towards your SBCC Study Abroad program. To find out if you are eligible for Financial Aid and to apply visit the Financial Aid page or meet with your financial aid advisor. The Financial Aid Office is located in the Student Services Building, Room # SS-210. They can also advise you on grants and loans.
SBCC offers a limited number of scholarships for qualified study abroad program participants. To access the scholarship application, please visit the SBCC Scholarships website and complete the online application. Most of these study abroad scholarships are need-based, although some merit-based scholarships are also available. The study abroad scholarship awards usually vary from $300 to $2,500.
Please note: All the scholarships require participation in a country in the program, not merely acceptance to a given program. If the programs are cancelled before students are actually in country, none of the scholarships will be awarded. Each scholarship has specific requirements that must apply and those are not subject to waiver in the event of cancellation. Please check with the financial aid office for any clarification or questions.

Information regarding the Gilman and Gilman-McCain scholarship and Covid-19 travel restrictions:
Please note that if the country where an applicant chooses to study abroad in 2021 is at a level 3 or 4 only due to COVID-19 at the time of application, the Gilman program will still consider that eligible. In the event that an applicant is selected for the Gilman scholarship and if the destination country is still at a level 3 or 4, even if only due to COVID-19, by the time the program starts, then the recipient will be required to change their program location. Please also note the October 6th deadline is for in-person and virtual programs starting between January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. This cycle encompasses Spring 2021, Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Academic Year 2021-2022 programs.
The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) was established in 2010 and intends to broaden access to study abroad for underrepresented groups of students. For eligibility criteria and instructions how to apply, please visit the Fund for Education Abroad website.
One of the scholarships through FEA is the Rainbow Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving LGBTQI student who aims to participate in a high-quality, rigorous education abroad program. This scholarship is made possible by the generous support of a group of international education professionals who are committed to advocating on behalf of LGBTQI students. These professionals counsel international and study abroad LGBTQI students, support their LGBTQI colleagues in the field, and collaborate through groups created with the support of NAFSA and the Forum for Education Abroad.
Upcoming Application Cycles:
- Spring 2022 deadline is September 15, 2021 at 12pm (noon) EST.
