Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This position is responsible for ensuring efficient claims processing for services provided.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBLITIES: (This list may not include all of the responsibilities assigned.)

  1. Keeps current on CPT, ICD9/ICD10 compliance and editing guidelines.
  2. Provide training to physicians and staff regarding regulatory issues and compliance.
  3. Keeps current on all regulatory issues and provides feedback to staff.
  4. Leads auditing of physician services to verify accuracy of billing.
  5. Schedules annual audit for all physicians and participates in presenting results.
  6. Works with or assists other Medical Coders and trainers in Coding department.
  7. Schedules follow-up audits for physicians not meeting clinic established standards of accuracy
  8. Works with other coding department coders and auditors to verify accuracy of audits.
  9. Assists in assigned edits to keep department current, and to identify trends for further auditing
  10. Provides exemplary customer service to patients and staff.
  11. Participates in department quality improvement, clinic safety, infection control and hazardous materials programs and activities.
  12. Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  13. Adheres to HIPAA regulations.
  14. Exercises discretion and maintains high level of confidentiality.
  15. Adheres to all policies and procedures.
  16. Performs related work as required.

 KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: This position will have a combination of education and experience to demonstrate competency in the methods, policies, procedures, regulations and protocols of a Claims function. High degree of tact and diplomacy, clear and concise communications skills, proficiency in mathematics, ability to follow established protocols and procedures repeatedly and within established error tolerances, and good decision making within established guidelines. High level of computer competency and attention to detail. Keyboard and ten-key by touch.Able to speak, read, comprehend (and be comprehended) in English. Ability to organize and prioritize work. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to reason and make sound judgments. Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, management, patients, medical staff, and the public. Skill in accepting constructive criticism and giving suggestions in a professional manner.

  • Minimum requirement graduation from High School or equivalent (some post secondary work preferred).

JOB SUMMARY

Maintains the Sanford computerized cancer database in compliance with the regulations of the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. Analyzes and interprets clinical and demographic data and determines appropriateness of case inclusion in the cancer database. Utilizes cancer registry specific software for the database and associated components. Possesses training and knowledge of cancer registry operations and regulations and extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes. Must possess knowledge of ICD9, ICD10, and morphology coding and excellent analytical skills for clinical analysis of the medical record and accurate assignment of site, stage, and other codes. Possesses excellent organizational skills and ability to adhere to regulatory deadlines. Work is extremely detailed and requires high accuracy rate to meet regulatory requirements. Works extensively with the electronic medical record. Adheres to HIPAA privacy and security regulations and policies related to protected health information. Interacts with physicians, administration, and others for conference preparation, committee work, and report preparation. Possesses computer proficiency for the reporting of cancer data as it relates to patient care, administration, CQI, and survival rates. Work involves the calculation and analysis of statistical data. Has excellent written and oral communication skills for various reporting requirements.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Identifies, codes and abstracts records of all eligible cancer patients (analytic and non-analytic), utilizing the cancer registry data system within the guidelines and requirements of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Program Standards. Conducts annual follow-up on patients in the Cancer Registry to ensure complete data tracking. Provides assistance to the Cancer Committee to ensure compliance with Commission on Cancer Standards, including Cancer Case conference participation. Prepares reports per data queries, as delegated, to provide timely and accurate statistics as required for treatment, quality, education, research and administrative purposes. Assists with the preparation of the annual report and departmental policies and procedures as requested. Flexible hours once training is complete. Remote work possible for experienced CTR's.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar is required. CTR exam eligible incumbants may be considered. Associate degree required, which must include two semesters of college-level anatomy and physiology. Must have a working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical records procedures, and knowledge of staging of cancers according to AJCC guidelines. Cancer Registry abstracting experience is preferred.

Summary:

Requirements:
Required: CTR certification

Minimum of two (2) years' experience working in a hospital based oncology registry/cancer program, preferred.

Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 125 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 500 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provided cancer care for nearly 60 percent of the adults and children in New Mexico affected by cancer. They treated 11,249 patients in 84,875 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. These patients came from every county in the State. More than 12 percent of these patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments and 35 percent of patients participated in other clinical research studies, including tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The 130 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded almost $60 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications. Promoting economic development, they filed more than 30 new patents in FY16, and since 2010, have launched 11 new biotechnology start-up companies. Scientists associated with the UNMCCC Cancer Control & Disparities have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 230 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery.  Learn more at http://cancer.unm.edu.

Under the direction of the Director of Cancer Services and supervision of the Manager of Oncology Services, this position gathers and analyzes data for required patient care evaluations and special studies, induding National Cancer Data Base, and assists in coordinating and monitoring major Cancer Information Systems (CIS) functions. Represents the cancer registry in various cancer program and hospital committees, Works with CIS staff, other hospital personnel, and physicians to insure the Cancer Program meets requirements for American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accreditation, additional certifications, and Centers of Excellence designations as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Associates Degree (AA). College-level medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology coursework, Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) with completion of a recognized Tumor Registrar's training program or equivalent. RHIA, RHIT, or other recognized health information related certification would be considered, if able to qualify for CTR Certification examination or within 18 months of hire,
