Welcome
What We Do
The academic counselors and support staff of the Academic Counseling Center provide students with information regarding academic planning, institutional and transfer requirements, goal setting, and professional career preparation requirements. These counselors specialize in academic planning, and work in collaboration with the counselors and support staff of the Career Center and Transfer Center.
ACADEMIC COUNSELING SERVICES:
-
Counseling:
Meeting with an academic counselor each semester is essential to your success. Counselors are available to new transfer students, continuing and returning students on a walk in basis during our open hours. New to college students who entered SBCC Fall 2009, can meet with a counselor in an "Academic Advising Part 2" session held October - January for spring semester planning. Sign up for these sessions at the Academic Counseling Center front desk. New to college students entering Spring 2010 can meet with a counselor in an "Academic Advising Part 1" session held December and January for spring semester planning. Sign up for these sessions at the ACC front desk or online. -
Student Education Plan (SEP):
An SEP should be developed with a counselor in an "Academic Advising Part 2" session during the student's first semester at SBCC. An SEP outlines a suggested course of study for the individual student based on major, transfer plans and sequence of courses. Students are encouraged to update their plan each semester or when a change is made to their major, transfer institution or other pertinent objectives. -
Transfer Advising:
Counselors provide transfer information, such as: General Education Requirements (IGETC and CSU Breadth), preparation for major courses, general admissions requirements, and information on the UC and CSU systems, as well as California independent and many out of state colleges and universities. With counselor guidance, students can explore options and create a plan to transfer. The student may then be referred to the Transfer Center for more in-depth information. -
Degrees/ Certificates:
With the option of over 75 degrees and 50 certificates at SBCC, a student often remains undecided on a major. Counselors are available to discuss options and give general information on each major offered. They can also provide Curriculum Guides, discuss prerequisites and general career information. Referrals may be made to the Career Center, or appropriate college and community resources. Degree application process. -
Probation/Disqualification:
When a student is placed on Academic Probation/Disqualification, or Progress Probation/Disqualification, counselors are available to counsel students on the most effective ways to achieve good academic standing. It is strongly recommended that students seek counseling as soon as possible to preserve their academic record. For information on district policy click here. -
