SBCC Mentorship Program

ACCCA Mentor Program

SBCC Mentorship Program Description

SBCC offers a yearlong collaboration that links veteran administrators having certain kinds of expertise with managers who are either committed to expanding their knowledge in certain areas of college management or who want to learn new ways to become effective leaders. During this period, the mentor and mentee will develop and implement an approved learning contract that outlines the objectives of the mentee.

The learning contract enables the mentee and mentor to discuss and formulate plans to develop clear expectations and goals, encourages communication, and involves both parties in the process. The contract also clarifies expectations and contributes to overall success of the program. The learning contract may range in scope from completing research projects that design more efficient managerial systems in specific areas of college operations to crafting a career development program for the mentee.

The basic objectives of the mentorship program are to:• Enhance knowledge directly applicable to career success• Identify skills needed for upward mobility• Develop a network of professionals• Assist and offer training so that participants can become viable rolemodels on and off campus• Provide participants with an introduction to a practical network forcareer opportunities• Develop strategies that contribute to a successful working relationshipin a culturally pluralistic and diverse society• Encourage and provide support for those working within the academic structure

The mentorship program provides a yearlong opportunity for participants to interact with veteran administrators who are noted for possessing skills and knowledge that would be useful to those selected as mentees. During the year, the mentor and mentee participate in training, special sessions, workshops, shadowing, and quarterly assessments.

Through a Management Mentorship Committee applicants are screened to determine mutual interests, skills, and expected needs. A mentee will submit an application requesting a first and second choice for mentors. The Mentorship Committee will assign the mentor-mentee pairs. Each mentor-mentee pair works closely throughout the year, adhering to components of his or her mutually designed learning contract.

A Certificate of Completion will be awarded mentor and mentee participants who have concluded the yearlong program. The Management Mentorship Program qualifies for one professional development increment of $500 dollars annually if the member is eligible for this stipend.

ACCCA Mentor Program Description

The ACCCA (Association of California Community College Administrators) Mentor Program is a statewide activity sponsored by ACCCA. The purpose of the Mentor Program is to provide a personal and professional development experience for selected individuals, who have demonstrated a potential for expanded leadership roles in their current, or future, responsibilities with the California Community College system. Participants develop competencies through participation in ACCCA Mentee leadership events held during the one-year program.

The ACCCA Mentee Retreat and other Mentee program functions are heavily participation-oriented, with an emphasis on skill building and collaborative learning. Each Mentee completes a learning contract, which has a strong leadership component, encouraging participants to immediately apply knowledge, principles, and skills acquired or enhanced through the ACCCA Mentor Program. Mentees are responsible for arranging meetings at least once every other month with their Mentor.

The Mentor serves as a guide, role model, colleague and expert to their Mentee. The Mentor guides the Mentee in the development and completion of their learning contract, exposes their Mentee to new and complex administrative tasks and processes, teaches their Mentee how to learn new administrative skills on their own campus, introduces their Mentee to higher level management systems, and practices the requisite skills needed with their Mentee. Last, but certainly not least, the Mentor frequently gives advice to their Mentee in the preparation of their application materials and interviews for promotional community college administrative positions.

ACCCA Mentees and Mentors develop an excellent, caring network of highly competent professional colleagues throughout the state. Many of these relationships developed when the program began in 1988 still flourish today.

Mentees’ participation includes attendance at the ACCCA annual Conference (Feb. 2006), a 3-day, 2-night leadership retreat in April 2006, attendance in 2 Leadership Best Practice Workshops (Spring and Fall 06, participation in “Day with the Chancellor” and his cabinet in Sacramento, January 2007, attendance at the ACCCA budget workshop, January 2007, plus more are included in the Program Fee.

If accepted into the ACCCA Mentor Program, the college will pay for up to two managers to participate in the program.

The deadline for the 2006/07 ACCCA Mentor Class is September 30, 2005. Application materials and more information can be obtained at the ACCCA website: www.accca.com
