Verified Absence Requests

As a guideline, absences are considered excessive if a student misses three (3) meetings, or the equivalent of one week of class attendance or according to absence guidelines as published in the course syllabus.

Absence due to an illness may be accepted as verified with proper documentation for a limited period of time. Students are expected to notify their instructor by e-mail and/or phone message if they are absent for a medical reason. Students are expected to make appointments for medical and dental treatment at times other than when classes are scheduled.

Upon verification of a valid emergency, the Dean will contact the student's instructors requesting their consideration of an excused absence. When requested and appropriate, the reason for the extended absence can remain confidential. Accommodation of an excused absence is at the sole discretion of the instructor and may be subject to the student's attendance and academic achievement in the course prior to commencing the extended absence. If an extended absence cannot be approved by an instructor, the Dean will discuss options with the student.

Generally accepted reasons for extended absence include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Accident - Injury
  • Assault
  • Death of an immediate family member
  • Hospitalization
  • Illness assessed and treated by a recognized medical service provider
  • Mandated court appearance
  • Natural disaster
  • Psychological incident/episode
