Summer 2023 Short Program

  • Live and study in Paris, the premier art capital of the world! Paris is the best place to see the art of the Romantics and the Impressionists. Study the work of Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Degas, Rodin, Van Gogh, and Toulouse Lautrec. Learn about the artists and their work in the world’s most famous museums. Over the centuries, so many of them have come to Paris to work and be inspired by the beauty and energy of this city. Experience in person the art you’ve admired in textbooks and movies!

    Explore Gothic cathedrals, Renaissance castles, Baroque palaces, classical gardens, and of course the Eiffel Tower and the Old Paris Opera House. Paris also has exceptional modern and fascinating postmodern buildings!

    Gather insight into French culture by living in the heart of this beautiful French city during this summer program. Experience fireworks at the Eiffel Tower on Bastille Day and the finale of the Tour de France in the heart of Paris! Read a book in an intimate park. Enjoy lively Parisian cafés, discover delicious food and vibrant music scenes by night.

  • Joy KunzDr. Joy Kunz teaches Art History at SBCC and combines her love of art, architecture, and travel in SBCC Study Abroad programs. Dr. Kunz has traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, and South America. She earned a degree in Literature from California Lutheran University, a Master's degree in Renaissance Art History from Saint Louis University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California Santa Barbara in American Modern and a sub-specialty in European 19th Century Art and Architecture. One of Professor Kunz's greatest pleasures is introducing students to great art and architecture and to the rich experience of living in Paris.

  • To acquaint program participants with the cultural aspects of life in Paris, France, a series of mandatory as well as optional free or inexpensive activities are planned, which varies but often includes lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, sports events, walking tours, sight visits, and dinners.  The below tentative excursions are included in the program (subject to change):

    • Guided walking tour of Le Marais on 17th century architecture
    • Guest lecture on French ballet or Opera inccluding an evening performance
    • Guided tour of the old Paris Opera House
    • Three guided visits to the Louvre
    • Tour of a specialty food market
    • Baguette-making class
    • Cheese tasting
    • One-day excursion to Chartres
    • One-day excursion to Fontainebleau/ Vaux-le-Vicomte or similar
    • Three-day, two-night excursion to Normandy/ Giverny or similar
    • Guided tour of Mont-Saint-Michel
    • Viewing of the Bayeux tapestry
    • Entry to Normandy beaches, Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, Monte's house and gardens in Giverny
    • Student ID card in paris to access Sainte-Chapelle, Cluny Museum, Musee d'Orsay, gothic church, most national museums (Entry depends on goodwill of the French government)
  •  You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC to apply for the program. However, you must meet the following requirements to participate in the program:

    - Must be in good academic standing
    - Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
    - Must successfully complete the application process

    After acceptance to the program and official program go announcement:
    - Must enroll at SBCC for the summer 2021 semester in order to participate in the program
    - Must show proof of international health insurance
    - We strongly encourage you to purchase Trip Cancellation insurance

    There is no major or language requirement for this program.

    Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you have completed the interview with the program director and all required documents are received by the Study Abroad office.

  • Art 100 Art in Culture (3 units) 
    A selection of significant works of art are studied in an expanded cultural context. Each of the works is contextualized within its own history, politics, economics, philosophy, technology, music and literary traditions to offer the fullest appreciation of art in culture.

    Skills Advisories: Eligibility for ENG 098 and 103.
    Overview of architecture, structural systems and urban design, from ancient civilizations to the present day.

    • Emergency contacts and access to staff in case of emergencies via phone 24/7 and toll-free number for 24/7 counseling help-line
    • Additional access to emotional and psychological health resources online, including live chat services and ability to schedule appintments with local English-speaking mental health professionals
    • Registration of all U.S. citizens for STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program of the U.S. State Department

    • Round-trip airfare (an optional group flight is available through ACCENT) see "Travel"
    • Passport or visa fees if applicable
    • Security deposit for housing (see details under "Housing")

    • SBCC tuition, fees, books (non-residents are required to pay out-of-state or out-of-country fees)
    • Personal expenses

    • Additional liability insurance (recommended for labtops, espensive cameras  or phones etc.)

  • Round-Trip airfare is not included in the program price.

    An optional group flight will be offered on a space-available basis through ACCENT Global Learning from lAX to Paris on a regularly scheduled airline.

    The group flight has a minimum requirement of 10 students in order to materialize. If 10 students are not registered for the group flight by Date TBD, the group flight will be cancelled. Therefore, students wanting to get on the group flight must apply for the program no later than date tbd

    For the group flight transfer, Accent Global Learning will arrange a coach bus and/or taxi transfer from teh Paris airport to the designated arrival point in Paris

    Participants missing the designated group arrival transfer are responsible for checking in during business hours at teh designated arrival point on the scheduled date of arrival and are responsible for all transfer arrengements and costs. 

    On the group departure date, Accent Global Learning will arrange a group departure transfer from the designated departure point in Paris to the Paris airport for group flight participants. If the group fligth gets canceled because it did not meet the 10 participants participants minimum, all participants will be responsible for their own transfer arrangements to depart Paris upon the departure day.

  • Double/Triple occupancy rooms in shared student apartments in Paris. Exact housing placements will be given upon arrival. 

    Kitchen facilities and shared common space in buildings populated by local residents.

    An additional security deposit is required by ACCENT. Participants are responsible for payment of any charges related to damages, losses, and/or expenses that are incurred by participants in the program regardless of accommodations. These charges will be invoiced to participants within 12 weeks of the end of the program and are payable to ACCENT immediately upon receipt of invoice. 

    Hotel for academic excursions with breakfast included.

    Food is not included in the program unless otherwise noted.

  • Any individual cancellation must be made in writing to ACCENT San Francisco Center and is effective the date of the receipt by Accent Global Learning. In addition, student must e-mail the SBCC Study Abroad office at nwalther@pipeline.sbcc.edu.

    Please refer to ACCENT's Cancellation policy. SBCC is not liable for any changes made to ACCENT's policies.

    The following per-participant cancellation fees will apply:

    70 days or more prior to the start of the program: $250
    50-69 days prior to the start of program: $500
    30-49 days prior to start of program: $1000
    15-29 days prior to start of program: $1500
    0-14 days prior to start of program: No refund

    Should the program be cancelled by SBCC after the program start date, not refund amount can be guaranteed, although Accent Global Learning will make reasonable effort to seek refunds from third parties for costs not yet incurred.

  • Detailed arrrival information will be provided to all participants approximately two weeks prior to arrival. Participants not able to check in during business hours at teh designated arrival point may be required to make and pay for their own accommodations for the first night.

    Transfer to and from the airports are not included. Please see additional information under "Travel"

    Program Orientation: A mandatory pre-departure meeting will be conducted at SBCC or online in May 2022, introducing the academic course work, addressing general aspects of study abroad and cross-cultural learning and providing practical information regarding preparation and travel. Please check with the Study Abroad Office for the exact date before you make your travel arrangements.

    An on-site orientation in Paris held by ACCENT staff on the day after arrival covers practical matters as well as aspects of cross-cultural living and learning, giving program participants the tools they need to make the most of their time in Paris.
