Earlier Friday, the host Lancers topped the Vaqueros (1-1) in their season opener 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.

Waddill, a 6-1 middle blocker from San Marcos High, dominated the middle in the Riverside match, thanks to the strong setting of Kelsey Soos, a freshman from Santa Ynez High. Maria Mayer had eight kills in the first set and Tune served nine straight points in the final set, stretching the lead to 19-10.

Mayer had eight kills and two blocks in the Pasadena match.

"Against Pasadena, we had first-game jitters and we looked like a young team on serve-receive," said coach Ed Gover. "We played great in the second match. Case Jenkins, a freshman from Hawaii, really stepped it up at the libero position and made a big difference."

SBCC will play its next six matches at home, starting Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. against Gavilan.

Saturday, Sept. 5 -- Gavilan at SBCC, 1 p.m.    SBCC 3, Gavilan 0    Record: 2-1

SBCC returns to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. home match against Santa Monica.

Mayer leads Vaqueros past Corsairs

Maria Mayer racked up 13 kills, a .440 hitting percentage and three aces on Friday night, guiding SBCC to a 25-10, 25-13, 25-14 women's volleyball sweep of Santa Monica in the Sports Pavilion. Jennifer Waddill, a 6-1 freshman from San Marcos, had 11 kills, two blocks and hit .556 while Jessica Tune added six kills for the Vaqueros (3-1), who won their third straight match.

"We had great passing in the back row and that really helped us get good outside and back-set hits," said Mayer, a 6-foot sophomore left-hander from San Marcos High. "We worked better as a team. We're getting more familiar with each other.

"We have a lot more talent (than last year) and a lot more players to help us in practice."

SBCC jumped ahead 6-1 and 14-5 in the first set and ended the match with a 12-2 run.

"We've been working on being steady and being able to sideout on serve receive," said coach Ed Gover. "I think our sideout percentage is extremely high right now. Obviously, Maria hitting on the right side was a strong weapon for us. When they tried to block her, we went to the middle or the outside.
"The addition of Kelsey (Soos) as a true setter allows Emilia (Shugrue, last year's setter) to play at her regular position, outside hitter. And we have a real talent in (libero) Case Jenkins, she really controls the back row."

The Vaqueros continue their six-match homestand with a 1 p.m. contest today against Imperial Valley.

Maria Mayer hit .353 with eight kills and served 13 straight points in the opening set, stretching the lead to 17-2. Jessica Tune had five kills, setter Kelsey Soos had 28 assists and Case Jenkins recorded 12 digs.
"We have a strong front row and a great back row," Gover added. "The ball doesn't go down and Kelsey has a multitude of weapons."

Wednesday, Sept. 16 -- L.A. Pierce at SBCC, 6 p.m.  SBCC 3, Pierce 2   Record: 5-1

SBCC jumped to a 17-10 lead in the first set, thanks to eight aces. In the fourth set, they had match points at 24-23 and 25-24 but couldn't close it out.
The Vaqueros built a 10-5 lead in the fifth set, thanks to a 9-3 run capped by a Waddill kill in the middle. The Brahmas cut a 14-11 deficit to 14-13 before Tune finished it off with a kill that deflected off a defender in the back row.
"One of our goals is to remain calm, we call it 'calm intensity,' " said Gover. "We stayed calm, even when we didn't get the win in the fourth set. We came back in the fifth set and never panicked. We're a good serving team and the ball really moves around in this hot gym.
"This was our best match of the year, by far."

"We had good solid ball control (in the Golden West match) and we won one set after trailing 22-19," said coach Ed Gover. "Kelsey (Soos, the setter) did an excellent job at the leadership position. She got the ball to the middle hitters at the right times."
In the morning match, Mayer pounded 11 kills and Bergmann, a freshman from Nordhoff High, had 10 kills and hit .529. Jessica Tune and Jenn Waddill added eight kills apiece. The Vaqueros rallied from a 17-14 deficit to win the fourth set in overtime.

No. 6 Vaqueros rally to beat No. 4 Moorpark
Waddill caps off five-game win; SBCC vaults into first

After suffering a tough 28-26 loss in the third set to fall behind 2-1, SBCC rallied for a 3-2 victory over Moorpark in an epic first-place women's volleyball showdown on Tuesday night in the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 20-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-17, 15-11.

SBCC, ranked sixth in the state, moved into a first-place tie atop the WSC with No. 4 Moorpark (17-2, 7-1). The Vaqueros improved to 18-2 and 7-1 with their sixth straight win while snapping the Raiders' 11-game win streak.

Jenn Waddill capped off the victory with back-to-back kills in the middle. Maria Mayer, Nicole Bergmann and Emilia Shugrue had 13 kills apiece for the Vaqueros, who've captured 18 of their last 19 matches. The only loss during that time was a 3-1 decision at Moorpark on Oct. 21.

"It was just like the last time we played them," said Waddill. "We were down 2-1 but this time, we really pulled through and 'The Bomb Squad' (teammates cheering from the bench) really pumped us up. The first game was a little shaky, then we came together as a team."

The first three sets were tight througout with 21 ties and just a two-point diffential in favor of Moorpark, 73-71.

"The first time we played them, we didn't know them that well," Gover explained. "Now, we have them diagnosed. They haven't been tested a lot this year. We showed great composure and we expected to go five tonight. When we lost the third game, we didn't get down.

"It's fun to play a dynamic team like that and it gets you prepared for the playoffs."

SBCC travels to Hancock on Friday before completing the regular season with a 7 p.m. home match against Ventura on Nov. 17.

Mayer hits .588 in sweep of Ventura

Maria Mayer pounded 10 kills and hit .588 on Tuesday night in the Sports Pavilion as SBCC swept Ventura 25-15, 26-24, 25-20 to earn a share of the WSC North title.

The Vaqueros, ranked No. 6 in Southern Cal, completed the regular season with a 20-2 overall record and a 9-1 mark in conference, which gave them their first title since 1998. They tied Moorpark for the WSC crown.

"It was good to finish strong and now we're ready for the playoffs," said captain Jessica Tune.

Nicole Bergmann and Antonia Antes each had eight kills with Bergmann hitting .667 and Antes .412. Mayer and Bergmann had zero hitting errors.

"We played with calm intensity," said coach Ed Gover, whose team won its last eight matches and 20 of its last 21. "There was no panic in any of our players. We had great transition kills out of the middle by Maria.

"These girls really deserve the WSC title. They get along extremely well, they play hard and they earned that title."
The Vaqueros are 12-0 at home this year and have won their last 16 home matches.

Tune's ace capped off the first set and Mayer finished the second with two straight kills. There were 15 ties in the second set. SBCC used an 8-2 run to take an 11-5 lead in the third set. After leading 20-13, Ventura pulled within three at 22-19 before Bergmann blasted a spike and Kelsey Soos served an ace.

The Vaqueros will be at home on Nov. 24 for a first-round match in the 16-team Southern Cal Regional.
