Vaqueros endure challenging season
It started before the opener and continued throughout the year. The SBCC women's tennis team lost a state quarterfinalist from the 2008 season just before the season began and kept losing players to injury, illness or other problems.
When those problems arose, Santa Barbara's first-year coach Debbie Ekola had to shuffle the lineup and move players into unfamiliar spots. On March 27, SBCC beat Hancock 7-2 with only five players.
The Vaqueros went 4-8 overall and placed fifth in the WSC with a 4-7 mark. Their season finale against first-place Cuesta was cancelled by rain.
Meghan Schaefer and Carla Dauden of Brazil played No. 1 and 2 singles for the Vaqueros. Schaefer advanced to the third round at the Ojai Invitational before dropping a three-set match. Kathy Startzman and Alex Prince won six of eight matches in doubles.
