Tuesday, Sept. 1 -- L.A. Mission at SBCC, 7 p.m.     SBCC 3, Mission 0      Record: 2-0

Kucharski scores twice in 3-0 shutout
Deckers gets final goal in Vaqueros' home debut

Jamie Kucharski scored two goals Tuesday night and Kelly Deckers added a late score as SBCC blanked L.A. Mission 3-0 in its women's soccer home opener.
The Vaqueros (2-0) improved to 16-1-5 in their last 22 games at La Playa Stadium.
Kucharski, a sophomore defender, converted a header in the 35th minute on an assist from Alyson Johnson for the only score of the first half. In the 65th minute, Kucharski blasted a free kick into the upper right corner from 40 yards out.
"It took us a while to get going," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We missed Casey Rubin (who was injured) in the middle. They pressured us high and we couldn't really settle on the ball. We didn't pass the ball as we know we can."
Deckers collected her fourth goal in two games on a shot from 22 yards in the 79th minute. Melanie Menin got the assist after some nifty dribbling.

Tuesday, Sept. 8 -- L.A. Pierce at SBCC, 7 p.m.   Pierce 1, SBCC 0    Record: 2-1

Vaqueros suffer rare home loss, 1-0
Maiwald sharp in goal; Pierce stays perfect with late goal

SBCC goalie Meghan Maiwald turned in a stellar performance on Tuesday night but couldn't stop a two-player rush and L.A. Pierce took advantage to post a 1-0 women's soccer victory at La Playa Stadium.

Jennifer Alvarez scored on a rebound in the 75th minute, handing the Vaqueros just their second loss in their last 23 homes games (16-2-5). It was the first goal allowed in three games by SBCC (2-1).

The Brahmas (3-0) have outscored their opponents 9-0 this year.

Maiwald had 10 saves, including a penalty kick by Ani Eishoei in the 17th minute.

"Meghan was tremendous," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We just got a call this afternoon from the coach at the University of Southern California and he's very interested in her."

Courtney Belsheim had a shot carom off the right goalpost in the 23rd minute and Kelly Deckers had a 1-on-1 chance with the goalie along the right side in the 85th minute but her shot was smothered.

"Maybe we could have finished our opportunities a little bit better but they're not machines," noted Sisterson. "They're human and sometimes they make errors. We'll work on finishing tomorrow and the day after and then look forward to playing at L.A. Harbor."

The Vaqueros will travel to Wilmington for a 6:30 p.m. game on Friday at L.A. Harbor before returning home on Sept. 15 to take on Santa Monica at 7 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 11 -- SBCC at L.A. Harbor, Wilmington, 6:30 p.m.   SBCC 2, L.A. Harbor 0   Record: 3-1

Vaqueros bounce back with road win
Johnson, Deckers score in 2-0 victory at L.A. Harbor

SBCC came alive in the second half on Friday night with two goals in a five-minute span and went on to blank L.A. Harbor 2-0 in a women's soccer match at Wilmington.
Alyson Johnson notched the first goal in the 75th minute off a corner kick by Casey Rubin and Kelly Deckers scored her fifth goal in the 79th after the goalie couldn't hold onto a 40-yard blast by Jamie Kucharski. The Vaqueros (3-1), who've outscored their opponents 12-1 this year, bounced back from a rare home loss on Tuesday to L.A. Pierce.

With two minutes remaining, goalie Meghan Maiwald made "a great save," according to coach John Sisterson, on a 20-yard free kick. It was the third shutout of the year for Maiwald and her 16th in the last two seasons.

Tuesday, Sept. 15 -- Santa Monica at SBCC, 7 p.m.   SBCC 0, Santa Monica 0, tie    Record: 3-1-1

Vaqueros, Corsairs battle to 0-0 tie
Maiwald notches fourth shutout in five games

SBCC dominated play for the first 30 minutes of Tuesday's nonconference match with Santa Monica and the Corsairs held the upper hand for much of the second half but in the end, neither was able to find the net in a 0-0 tie.

Sophomore defender Alyson Johnson headed a ball off the line in the 42nd minute and had a chip shot float just over the crossbar in the 67th. Goalie Meghan Maiwald posted her fourth shutout in five games for the Vaqueros (3-1-1) and the 17th of her career.

SBCC is 16-2-6 at La Playa Stadium over the last three years.

"The defense played well, we've only allowed one goal all year," noted Santa Barbara coach John Sisterson. "We're finding it a bit tough to score goals sometimes."

Maiwald, who was born deaf, elected to play for the Vaqueros this year instead of competing with the U.S. women's team at the Deaflympics in China.

"Meghan is an amazing girl," said Sisterson. "She would have had a gold medal if she had played in the Deaflympics (the USA beat Germany on Monday for the gold)."

The Vaqueros will play three games in three days this weekend in Northern California, starting Friday at Foothill. They'll be at West Valley on Saturday and Cabrillo on Sunday.

Vaqueros tie 0-0 for second straight game

SBCC played to a scoreless tie for the second time in four days on Friday afternoon after a five-hour drive to Foothill in Los Altos. It was the fifth shutout in six games for goalie Meghan Maiwald. The Vaqueros are 3-1-2.
"Meghan and the defense were great again but she didn't really get tested," said coach John Sisterson. "We had the majority of the possessions in the game but we couldn't finish.
"Kelly Deckers had a good through ball on the last kick of the game and we thought we should have gotten a PK because of a hand ball but the ref didn't see it that way."
The Vaqueros continue their "three games in three days" trip in Northern California with 4 p.m. starts on Saturday at West Valley and Sunday at Cabrillo.

Saturday, Sept. 19 -- SBCC at West Valley, Saratoga, 4 p.m.  SBCC 4, West Valley 1   Record: 4-1-2

Fabing, Deckers score two apiece in 4-1 win

Deckers assisted on the first-half scores in the 37th and 43rd minutes for the Vaqueros (4-1-2). Danielle Jones fed Deckers for a goal from inside the box in the 55th minute and after West Valley converted a penalty kick, Deckers completed the scoring with a left-footed boot after a solid run down the left side.
"We looked very comfortable on a warm day," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We passed the ball well and played extremely well."
The Vaqueros will play their third game in three days on Sunday at Cabrillo.

Sunday, Sept. 20 -- SBCC at Cabrillo, Aptos, 4 p.m.  SBCC 1, Cabrillo 1, tie   Record: 4-1-3

Belsheim's late goal helps Vaqueros tie

Courtney Belsheim scored on a header in the 82nd minute on Sunday afternoon, helping the SBCC women's soccer team gain a 1-1 tie with Cabrillo College in Aptos. Danielle Jones assisted on the goal.
The Vaqueros, playing their third game in three days, are 4-1-3 after going 1-0-2 on their Northern California trip. "It was a tough 72 hours but we showed a lot of character," said coach John Sisterson, whose team has outscored its opponents 17-3.
SBCC fell behind 1-0 in the third minute on a 6-yard free kick after the referee ruled that Nicole Carver made a back pass to goalie Meghan Maiwald. "The ball ricocheted off Nicole but the ref said it was a pass," noted Sisterson. "I was really pleased with how we fought back."
Sisterson said his team had several solid scoring chances in the second half, including a 20-yard blast by Kelly Deckers that the Cabrillo goalie saved with a diving effort.
The Vaqueros will host Taft on Friday at 1 p.m. in their final nonconference game.

Friday, Sept. 25 -- Taft at SBCC, 1 p.m. SBCC 2, Taft 0  Record: 5-1-3

Fabing, Jones spark Vaqueros
Maiwald, defense post sixth shutout

Elicity Fabing scored a header in the 19th minute on a hot Friday afternoon at La Playa Stadium and Danielle Jones added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as SBCC blanked Taft 2-0 in its final nonconference women's soccer match.

The Vaqueros improved to 5-1-3 with goalie Meghan Maiwald and the defense posting their sixth shutout in nine games. SBCC has outscored its opponents 19-3 this year.

Alyson Johnson assisted on Fabing's third goal, which came from 15 yards out, while Jamie Kucharski set up the score by Jones.

"I had to get ahead of the defender, it was a good cross by Aly," said Fabing, a freshman midfielder from Lompoc High. "Our passing was better in the second half."

Elena Drake of Taft received a red card in the 50th minute, forcing the Cougars to play a man down the rest of the way.

"It was a workmanlike performance," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We knew it would be a tough game. It's nice to have a win like this going into conference."

The Vaqueros open WSC play against Hancock on Tuesday at La Playa, starting at 7:30 p.m. SBCC is 17-2-6 in its last 25 home games.

Deckers, a freshman from Valencia High, had three goals in the first half as the Vaqueros built a 6-0 lead. Mikaela Cox had a goal and two assists, Renee Block had a goal and one assist and Casey Rubin added a pair of assists for the 11th-ranked Vaqueros (6-1-3, 1-0-0).
Deckers is tied for the state lead in scoring with 28 points (12 goals, 4 assists). Goalie Meghan Maiwald, ranked No. 3 in California with a 0.30 goals-against average, recorded her seventh shutout of the year and 20th of her career.
"The girls knocked the ball around really well," said coach John Sisterson. "Hancock didn't have a team last year, so they're an all-freshman group. We got all our players in and that was good."

Friday, Oct. 2 -- SBCC at Moorpark, 2 p.m.  SBCC 1, Moorpark 1, tie Records: 6-1-4, 1-0-1

SBCC is 6-1-4 on the year and 1-0-1 in WSC North action. Moorpark (2-0-3, 0-0-1) tied the game midway through the second half.
"It was a hot afternoon and the girls really struggled to find their feet," said coach John Sisterson. "It was a tough game, Moorpark competed very well."

Tuesday, Oct. 13 -- SBCC at Oxnard, 2 p.m.  SBCC 2, Oxnard 0   Records: 7-1-4, 2-0-1

Deckers nets 13th goal in road win

Freshman Kelly Deckers notched her 13th goal on a rainy Friday afternoon and added a second-half assist in SBCC's 2-0 victory at Oxnard.
Deckers, the fourth-leading scorer in the state with 31 points, scored in the 22nd minute on an assist from Margot Valenzuela. In the 74th minute, Courtney Belsheim converted a close shot after taking a cross from Deckers.
It was the first game in 11 days for the Vaqueros (7-1-4, 2-0-1 WSC), who are ranked 14th in Southern California.
"You could tell we took more than a week off," said coach John Sisterson. "We were a little rusty. We did a good job of controlling the possession on a tough, slippery field."
It was the eighth shutout of the year for goalie Meghan Maiwald and the defense. The Vaqueros have outscored their last four opponents 15-1 and for the year, they've scored 30 goals while allowing just four.

Friday, Oct. 16 -- SBCC at Cuesta, San Luis Obispo, 3 p.m.  SBCC 1, Cuesta 1, tie  Records: 7-1-5, 2-0-2

Cuesta ties SBCC 1-1 with late goal

SBCC didn't turn in its best performance on Friday in San Luis Obispo and Cuesta took advantage to post a 1-1 tie. Courtney Belsheim gave the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on an assist from Kelly Deckers.
The Cougars (2-7-3, 1-2-1) tied the game in the 90th minute. The Vaqueros are 7-1-5 and 2-0-2 in the WSC North.
"It was really disappointing," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We had a number of chances but we didn't play well. It was a scrappy game. We didn't compete like we could have. But we've still only lost one game this year."
The Vaqueros play host to first-place Ventura on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

    Vaqueros suffer first WSC loss

Ventura took a 1-0 lead in the third minute Tuesday night and went on to beat SBCC 3-0 in a showdown for first place in the WSC North. Taylor Benton scored the first goal for the 14th-ranked Pirates (10-3, 4-1) at La Playa Stadium. The visitors made it 2-0 in the 69th minute on an own goal by SBCC.
The Vaqueros fell to 7-2-5 overall and 2-1-2 in conference. It was just the third home loss in the last three years (18-3-6).
"Ventura is a good team and our backs were against the wall after the third minute," said coach John Sisterson. "It was difficult for the next 10-15 minutes, then we settled down and came back at them. We were in the game at halftime (trailing 1-0).
"In the second half, I thought we dominated until the second goal went in. That killed us a little bit and our heads went down. Overall, it was a big improvement from Friday (when they tied Cuesta 1-1)."

"Jamie put a couple of good balls in on free kicks but we just couldn't get on the end of them," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "We never got going against this team. We never really got out of second gear and you're going to struggle when you make two errors.
"You've got to come out and compete. We've only got ourselves to blame."
The Vaqueros will travel to Taft on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. nonconference game. They play their final two regular-season home games on Nov. 6 (Oxnard) and Nov. 10 (Cuesta).

"We could have played better," said coach John Sisterson. "We were missing (defender) Lindsey Snow with an injury. It was a pretty even match."
Courtney Belsheim beat two players and got off a 25-yard blast in the first half but it was also wide of the goal. Sisterson said Taft (7-7-3) didn't have many scoring chances.
Goalie Meghan Maiwald posted her ninth shutout of the season and boosted her school-record career total to 22.

Dani Jones had two assists while Elicity Fabing and Renee Block added second-half goals for the 23rd-ranked Vaqueros (9-3-6, 4-2-2 WSC), who are No. 14 in Southern California and need to finish in the top 16 to make the playoffs.
Deckers, a freshman from Valencia, drilled a header on a corner kick by Jones in the sixth minute. She broke free, dribbled around the keeper and scored in the 26th minute, then made it 3-0 in the 33rd on a 20-yard shot that trickled through the goalie's hands. She scored her fourth goal in the 69th minute, boosting the lead to 5-0.
Deckers, who has 17 goals on the year, had a five-goal game on Sept. 29 against Hancock.
"We were just trying to stay calm because we knew this team might not have been on the same level as us," said Deckers. "We wanted to play at our level, not their level. I couldn't have done this without my teammates."
Deckers could have scored more if she hadn't hit the crossbar in the 22nd minute and been denied by the goalie in a one-on-one situation in the 40th.
Courtney Belsheim, a key midfielder for the Vaqueros, left the field with a knee injury in the 59th minute and never returned. Fabing scored in the 64th minute and Deckers made it 5-0 five minutes later. Brittnie Frazier spoiled SBCC's shutout bid with a goal in the 89th minute and Block made it 6-1 in the 90th minute on an assist from Aly Radford.

"We had a play developing and if their player hadn't scored, the ball probably would have gone to our player and we could have scored," said coach John Sisterson. "Renee played well and Alyson Johnson was steady in the back.

"We're ranked 14th right now and the top 16 go to the playoffs."

SBCC closes out the regular season on Friday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Ventura.
