Hancock rallies past Vaqueros, 60-57

Hancock overcame a 13-point second-half deficit to edge SBCC 60-57 on Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion.
The Bulldogs (12-8, 2-3 WSC North) trailed by 12 at halftime and fell behind 46-33 on a layup by the Vaqueros’ Victoria Jackson with 10:01 to play. The Vaqueros (9-10, 1-4) were still up by five (56-51) after Elia Salazar’s inside bucket with 2:15 remaining.
Salazar led the Vaqueros with 12 points and six rebounds. Sheryl Scheppele added nine points on 3-6 shooting from the 3-point arc. SBCC was 8-27 from long distance.
The Vaqueros were outshot 40 to 32 percent but the big difference came at the foul line where Hancock made 21-26 and the Vaqueros were 5-11.
Santa Barbara ended the first half on a 17-4 run that produced a 35-23 lead.
“We have to play hard for 40 minutes,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We were up by five with two minutes to play. You’ve got to defend in that situation. Then we turned it over and took some quick shots.
“You have to stay positive in times like these.”
Hancock ended the game on a 9-1 run. Justine Roland scored eight straight points to get the Bulldogs back in it and Davina Valerio hit a tough, twisting layup to give the visitors their first lead of the second half at 57-56 with 0:58 on the clock.
The Vaqueros travel to L.A. Pierce on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest.
