Frannie DeAngelis scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds Friday night, leading SBCC to a 70-53 women's basketball victory over Long Beach City in the opening round of its MTXE Tournament.
The 18th-ranked Vaqueros won despite making only 23 percent (24-104) from the field and having all five starters on the bench with foul trouble after 10 minutes. DeAngelis hit 11-of-21 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the 3-point line.
Chelsea Hewitt and Hannah Cooper came off the bench to score 10 and nine points, respectively. The Vaquero bench extended a 21-18 lead to 37-23 at intermission.
"I'm ecstatic," said SBCC coach Sandrine Krul. "When your second and third unit can outscore a team by 14 points in 10 minutes, that makes a coach happy."
Long Beach closed to within seven, 47-40, with 10:42 to play before DeAngelis reeled off nine unanswered points.

Rally comes up short in 84-76 loss to Grossmont
A late rally by SBCC wasn't enough to prevent an 84-76 women's basketball loss to Grossmont on Saturday night in the semifinals of the MTXE Tournament at the Sports Pavilion.
Giovanna Aplin led the Vaqueros (1-1) with 15 points while Jake Kelly had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and just two turnovers in her SBCC debut. Francesca DeAngelis added 14 points, Bridget Conlan had 12 and Mara Lux posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Vaqueros trailed 40-31 at halftime and 76-62 with 2:48 to play before cutting the deficit to six with 50 seconds left.
"If we had played the first 37 minutes like we did the last three, we would have won," said coach Sandrine Krul. "I'm happy that we didnt stop playing at the 2:48 mark. That shows a lot of guts for the second game of the season and to almost pull out a win on pure guts, shows a lot of promise for this group."
