Challenges were everywhere for the SBCC track teams in 2009, from a new coach to new athletes and assistant coaches.
"The biggest challenge was developing a new philosophy for program," said Scott Fickerson, who took over as SBCC's head coach after seven years at Cal Lutheran. "The challenge of 'doing it all myself' was tough, but both the student-athletes and my assistants believed in what I was espousing and trying to build and worked hard to rise to the occasion.
"My staff was small for the number of athletes we had (roughly 40 athletes with three total coaches, one of whom attended only two practices per week) and made it difficult to provide the attention and coaching details that a top-notch program needs. Given our challenges, we performed admirably."
The Vaquero men placed eighth in the WSC Finals while the women were 11th. "We didn't score well as a team but had a number of strong individuals earn high honors and qualify for Southern California Championships," Fickerson noted.
Jesse Trace overcame "some big obstacles" and the high hurdles to place second in the 110 hurdles at the WSC Championships. Ossie Castrorena heaved the shot put 46-6, the seventh-best mark in school history, at the WSC Prelims while Paige Colijn ran the eighth-fastest women's 5,000 time to become one of eight qualifiers for the Southern Cal Championships.
Carina Celio finished 11th in Southern Cal in the triple jump (34-2) while Paige was 16th in the 5,000 (19:13.38).
Fickerson said approximately 75 percent of his men's and women's teams could return in 2010.
"I'd like to add another coach to provide a higher level of coaching effectiveness, continue to raise the expectations the athletes have for themselves and their level of competition and provide a better year-round training regime," Fickerson concluded. "I look forward to increasing the numbers in the coming years as well."
