Vaqueros take third in first WSC mini-meet
Worthge, Peyton win long jump, 110 hurdles with personal bests
SBCC's track and field teams both placed third on Thursday in WSC Mini-Meet No. 1 at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. Each mini-meet features four of the 12 WSC schools.
Canyons edged Glendale for the men's title 90.5 to 89 with SBCC taking third at 68.5. Glendale won the women's meet with 119 points while the Vaqueros were third with 21.
Three freshmen posted wins for Santa Barbara on the men's side. Jonathan Worthge took the long jump in a personal-best 6.31 meters, Marquel Peyton recorded a personal-best 16.11 in the 110 high hurdles and Ossie Castorena won the shot put at 13.53 meters.
Freshman Carina Belio placed first in the women's triple jump (9.84m) and second in the long jump (4.58m) for the Vaqueros.
Sophomore Angelica Smith equalled her personal best while placing second in the high jump (1.47m). She was also second in the 100 hurdles in 16.20.
"We performed well," said coach Scott Fickerson. "It was difficult to know where we would stand, being such a young team. We competed well and improved over our scrimmage."
Friday, Feb. 27 -- WSC Mini-Meet No. 2 at Ventura, 2 p.m.
Angelica Smith wins three events for Vaquero women
Angelica Smith captured three events and earned 15 points for the SBCC women in a four-way WSC meet at Ventura. Smith, who played middle blocker on the volleyball team last fall, won the high jump (4-8), the 100-meter hurdles (16.28) and the 400 hurdles (1:10.68) for SBCC, which placed fourth with 33 points.
Paige Colijn captured the 1,500 by more than seven seconds (5:18.68) and was third in the 800 (2:43.03).
The men, who also placed fourth, were led by first-place finishes from Marquel Peyton (110 high hurdles, 15.76) and Chris Costanzo (800m, 2:04.12). Constanzo also tied for second in the pole vault at 11-0.

Colijn, Smith, Celio get wins for SBCC
Women take third, men place fourth at WSC No. 3
Paige Colijn, Angelica Smith and Carina Celio all posted wins on Friday, leading the SBCC women's track team to a third-place finish in WSC Mini-Meet No. 3 at Bakersfield. The Vaquero men took fourth in the four-team meet.
Colijn won the 3,000 meters 11:17.42 while while Smith was first in the 400 hurdles (1:10.64) for the second straight meet. Celio placed first in the triple jump at 33 feet, 6 inches. Moorpark won the women's meet with 89 points, followed by Bakersfield (61), SBCC (29) and Santa Monica (7).
In the men's meet, Marquel Peyton took second for the Vaqueros in the 110 high hurdles (15.83) and Donald Morganson was third in the 800 (2:00.98). Chris Costanzo was also third in the pole vault (11-6).
Grant Weeks threw the javelin for the first time and took fourth with a heave of 146-10.
"We competed well," said first-year coach Scott Fickerson. "We're definitely tired from training. We'll back off the next few weeks and hopefully get some big performances in the Easter Relays (March 20) and WSC No. 4 (March 27), which are both at home."

Graydon, Colijn post wins at 71st Easter Relays
14 schools compete in Community College meet
Graydon Manning and Paige Colijn recorded wins for SBCC on Friday in the 71st annual Easter Relays at La Playa Stadium. Fourteen schools competed in the track and field meet, a 50 percent increase over last year, according to Vaquero coach Scott Fickerson.
Manning, racing for the first time this year, captured the men's 1,500 meters in 4:07.21 while Colijn took the women's 5,000 in 19:19.98. Second-place finishers for the Vaqueros included Carina Celio (women's triple jump, 33-6 1/2) and Johnathan Worthge (men's long jump, 21-2).
Angelica Smith took third in the women's high jump at 4-8 1/4. The men's distance medley relay team of Chris Costanzo, Jeff Rosecrance, Dezmon Hunter and Matt Little was also third in 10:48.66.
The Vaqueros will host WSC Mini-Meet No. 4 on Friday at 2 p.m.

Worthge posts two firsts as Vaquero men take second
Castorena takes shot put in WSC Mini-Meet No. 4 at SBCC
Johnathan Worthge captured the triple jump and long jump on Friday at La Playa Stadium, helping the SBCC men's track team to a season-best second place in WSC Mini-Meet No. 4.
Cuesta claimed the title in the four-team meet with 74 points. Santa Barbara was second with 45, edging third-place Santa Monica by five points.
Worthge recorded a season-best 41 feet, 4 inches in the triple jump and won the long jump at 21-0. Ossie Castorena topped the shot-put field with a heave of 44-2. The Vaqueros also won the 4 x 400 relay in 3:29.48. The squad consisted of Donald Morgenson, Dezmon Hunter, Paul Niglio and Jeff Rosecrance.
The Vaquero women placed third with 38 points. Cuesta took first at 54, followed by Valley with 46.
SBCC had three winners -- Elizabeth Iberti (400, 1:13.65), Paige Colijn (3,000, 11:18.50) and Angelica Smith (high jump, season-best 5-0). Colijn won her race by 200 meters, according to coach Scott Fickerson.
Second-place finishers included Stephanie Potter (javelin, 76-7) and Carina Celio (long jump, 15-4).
"We're starting to rest up and sharpen up for the (WSC) championships," said Fickerson. "They're only three weeks away."
The Vaqueros will compete in the WSC Prelims on April 18 in Ventura, followed by the WSC Finals on April 25 in Bakersfield.
Men--Cuesta 74, SBCC 45, Santa Monica 40, L.A. Valley 21.
Women--Cuesta 54, L.A. Valley 46, SBCC 38, Santa Monica 32.

Trace takes second in men's 110 hurdles at WSC Finals

Celio, Colijn reach SoCal Finals
Saturday, May 9 -- Southern Cal Finals, Mt. SAC, Walnut, 11 a.m. Carina Celio of SBCC went 34 feet, two inches Saturday to place 11th in the Southern Cal Track & Field Finals at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Teammate Paige Colijn placed 16th in the 5,000 in 19:13.38.
"Carina improved on her jump from prelims and it's always nice to finish on a high note," said coach Scott Fickerson. "She had a great season and she's real fired up to improve next year."
Colijn turned in a strong performance in tough conditions.
"For Paige to run her second-best time of the season in these hot conditions (80 degrees) is a real accomplishment," Fickerson noted. "She had a great first season of track and field and should really run well next year with more experience."
Celio takes 11th in Southern Cal triple jump
SBCC's Carina Celio went 34 feet, 3/4 inches in the triple jump on Saturday to place 11th in the Southern Cal Track Prelims and earn a spot in Saturday's SoCal Finals at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. She'll be joined by teammate Paige Colijn in the 5,000 meters.
Angelica Smith was 11th in the women's high jump at 4-9, missing a qualifying berth by two spots. Jesse Trace took 13th in the men's 110 hurdles, lowering his personal best to 15.28. The top nine hurdlers advanced.
Osvaldo Castorena was 14th in the shot put (45-0 3/4), John Worthge was 16th in the long jump (21-5 3/4), Aeryus Holloway placed 16th in the triple jump (44-4 1/4) and Stephanie Potter was 18th in the women's discus (105-1).
"
Everyone competed well and had good marks, but it took a great mark to move on to finals with very stiff competition," said first-year coach Scott Fickerson. "I'm proud of what these athletes accomplished on Saturday and the entire season."
Jesse Trace placed second in the men's 110 high hurdles with a personal-best 15.64 on Saturday in the WSC Track Finals at Bakersfield, leading eight SBCC qualifiers to the Southern Cal Prelims.
Aeryus Holloway was third in the triple jump (44-3 1/2) while Jonathon Worthge took fifth in the long jump (21-1 1/2) and Donald Morgansen (2:00.55) was sixth in the men's 800. The top six finishers in each event advanced to the SoCal Prelims on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Paige Colijn took fourth in the women's 5,000 in 18:55.26 and Carina Celio was sixth in the triple jump at 34 feet, 1/2 inch.
Two Vaqueros received at-large berths to the SoCal meet. Ossie Castorena was seventh in the men's shot put (44-10 1/2) while Stephanie Potter placed seventh in the women's discus (113-8).
Holloway, Colijn and Potter all recorded personal records.
"I thought we'd have four or five qualifiers," said coach Scott Fickerson. "To have eight is great. We had a real good day."
Moorpark won the men's meet with 213 points while Glendale was the women's champion at 182. SBCC's men placed eighth and the women tied for 10th.
