SYNOPSIS:Charley Brock is Deputy Mayor of NYC. When four upper middle class professional couples gather to celebrate Charley and Myra’s 10th wedding anniversary an attempted suicide is discovered - or is it? A missing wife, missing cook, a damaged car, whiplash, a reoccurring back spasm, and rumors galore add to the convoluted plot. The situation gets progressively more difficult to sustain when nobody can remember who has been told what about whom. It’s a great farce - complete with off-the-wall circumstances, mistaken identities, and doors opening and closing. A real ensemble tour de force, Rumors is a broad physical comedy that needs dynamic and energetic performers with strong vocal and physical skills, excellent comic timing, and a great sense of humor!
Characters: 5 men and 5 women (ages listed are approximate)
Ken Gorman – (40). A rather high-strung lawyer, fiercely protective of his client and friend, Charley. He frantically attempts to control events, but winds up temporarily deaf and confused.
Chris Gorman – (35). A tense publishing lawyer trying to kick the cigarette habit. She’s a bundle of nerves, but gamely copes with the ever-increasing stress of the evening through wisecracks, lying, and alcohol.
Lenny Ganz – (late 30’s, early 40’s). A short-tempered accountant with a whiplash injury; the poor, put-upon guy just isn't having a good day, even before the party starts; irascible, sarcastic, and very likeable.
Claire Ganz – (late 30’s, early 40’s). Lenny's high-society, acid-tongued wife loves to hear and spread gossip and rumors. She does her best to cope and keep up with the goings on.
Ernie Cuzack – (early 50’s). A laid-back and clueless psychologist, comfortable in his own skin. As the evening progresses, the doctor becomes resolved to figure everything out.
Cookie Cuzack – (40’s). A loopy, yet amiable, TV cooking show host, who’s having major back spasms; very quirky and often the last to grasp what’s happening. Eager to please.
Glen Cooper – (40’s). A self-protective, somewhat exasperated, ambitious, polished, “aspiring” state senator. His main concerns are avoiding scandal and convincing his wife that she’s the only woman in his life.
Cassie Cooper – (30’s). A high-maintenance trophy wife, vain insecure, jealous and shrewish who’s convinced her husband’s having at least one affair. Believes in the healing power of crystals.
Officer Ben Welch – (late 40’s, early 50’s). A no-nonsense, not easily tricked veteran police officer who has seen and heard it all.
Officer Connie Pudney – (late 20’s). Welch’s female rookie partner who backs him up during the investigation.
