OVER THE TAVERN

by Tom Dudzick

GARVIN THEATRE
OCTOBER 19 - NOV 3, 2007

Called “one of the biggest grass roots successes in American regional theatres”, Tom Dudzick’s Over the Tavern, chronicles the struggles and joys of the loving but flawed Pazinski family.
Set in 1959 in a crowded apartment over a bar in Buffalo, New York, Over the Tavern evokes an easier time, when father knew best and life’s struggles seemed more manageable.
That is not to say that the Pazinski family’s struggles are insignificant. 12-year old Rudy is in an ongoing conflict with his teacher, Sister Clarissa, and announces that, instead of being confirmed, he’d rather shop around for a more “fun” religion; his brother Georgie has just mastered his first swear word; his sister Annie battles a Twinkie addiction while yearning for romance; and his parents just try to keep the business afloat and the family together.
Cast in the spirit of inquiry and good humor, Over the Tavern is a hilarious look at family and is filled with a simple kind of heartache and loads of laughter.

"A hilarious and touching depiction of 1959 Americana. Absolutely enchanting...a little bit of heaven!"

BORN YESTERDAY

by Garson Kanin

GARVIN THEATRE
MARCH 14 - 29, 2008

Part romantic comedy, part political satire, Born Yesterday simultaneously condemns corruption in American politics and confirms the value of a good old-fashioned education.
Revolving around the unforgettable characters of Billie Dawn,an illiterate former chorus girl, and her boyfriend, a scrap-metal magnate who is determined to buy himself influence inWashington, D.C., the play conveys a 1940’s era look at luxury, power and overwhelming greed.
Written by acclaimed playwright Garson Kanin, Born Yesterday broke Broadway box office records when it opened in 1946, running for a whopping 1,642 performances, but it is just as relevant today. As long as money still talks, corruption still exists in Washington, and women still defy stereotypes, Born Yesterday will ring true.

"Born Yesterday remains an enduring delight."

OMNIUM GATHERUM

by Theresa Rebeck and Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros

JURKOWITZ THEATRE
MAY 2-MAY 17, 2008

Hungry for something rich and tasty? We have just the thing foryou: Omnium Gatherum, the appetizing new play by Theresa Rebeck and Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros.
Believing that lively debate is the heart and soul of the perfect dinner party, Suzie, a perky, ever-smiling Martha Stewart-type domestic goddess, has invited an assortment of opinionated personalities to share a surreal meal. Eight people from very different walks of life, each with strong opinions about the right way and the wrong way to look at any issue, dine on an exquisite feast, argue the global implications of life after September 11th and welcome the most provocative dinner guest in recent memory.
Urgent, impassioned and often hilarious, Omnium Gatherum had everyone talking when it was first presented at The Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival in 2003.

“A feisty feast of wicked wit and torrid topics.”

— THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Spirited, amusing and smart. A play that wants us to think as much as we feel.”
