You are invited to participate in Santa Barbara City College’s fall semester study abroad program in the three successive art centers of Europe: Florence, Rome, and Paris. This program will focus on Renaissance and Baroque art (15th through 17th centuries) and 20th century art. You will first spend four weeks in Florence where the Renaissance was born and flowered during the 15th century. In the next five weeks you will study in Rome where the High and Late Renaissance flourished during the 16th century and the Baroque style was born in the early 17th century. The city has textbook examples of Italian Baroque architecture, painting, and sculpture and as much of it as possible will be explored. Paris succeeded Rome as the art center of Europe so you will move there for the last four weeks. In Paris, through the Louvre, you will see examples of all the Renaissance and Baroque artists you’ve studied as well as French Baroque architecture. Paris, which held onto its role as the art center of Europe into the early 20th century, will also provide you with the best of early 20th century art. Walking tours of various districts of Paris will give you the opportunity to see the studios, apartments, cafes, streets, and boulevards where the legendary artists lived, worked and played.
