PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Are you ready for an adventurous challenge? If yes, then we encourage you to apply to SBCC’s new summer study abroad program in Rwanda. Rwanda was brought to the forefront of humanitarian interest in the popular movie, Hotel Rwanda, which documented the 1994 genocide. Since last year, the SBCC Communication Department has been involved in fund-raising projects for Rwanda, which has sparked enormous interest among students. What better way to follow up on this interest than with an opportunity for you to go to Rwanda and help in the ongoing effort to rebuild the lives of those affected?
While on this program, you will study intercultural communication and documentary filmmaking and volunteer at a community center for orphans and widows of the genocide. Your intercultural communication class will provide a theoretical understanding of your experiences and your filmmaking class will involve shooting assignments and projects to document your own stories of the people, the land, and their history. In addition, you will travel to other locations in the country to see the amazing countryside and wild life.
SBCC’s summer program in Rwanda is an opportunity to help you live in another world that in no way resembles your own and learn skills that are impossible to learn in a traditional classroom, such as tolerance, empathy, and compassion. We encourage you to join us!
