INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION, DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING &
VOLUNTEER SERVICE
IN
RWANDA
JUNE 13 - JULY 10, 2009

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Six units of transferable credits
  • Volunteer work at the Ntarama Community Center in Kigali, Rwanda, and at a center for hearing impaired in northern Rwanda
  • Excursion to Akagera National Park to see giraffes, primates, hippos, and other wildlife
  • Excursion to Northern Rwanda, including morning volcano walk or optional gorrilla tracking (at an additional cost of approx. $550 per person to be paid separately. Gorrilla sightings cannot be guaranteed.)
  • Visit to the Rwandan National Museum and the Genocide Museum
  • Camraderie, community, and life-long friendships from traveling with others

Tentative Program Itinerary (subject to change without prior notice)

  • Saturday, June 13, 2009 - depart US – travel day
    • Sunday, June 14, 2009– travel day
    • Monday, June 15, 2009 – free time in Kigali. Accommodation in twin - bedded en-suite guesthouse rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (2 nights). Group dinner
    • Tuesday, June 16, 2009 – morning orientation with an AIFS
    representative including local area information, visit to the Genocide
    Museum, group lunch at Solace Ministries, afternoon visits to Solace
    projects with transport provided. Group dinner.
    • Wednesday, June 17, 2009 – private 4x4 jeep transfer to Akagera
    National Park including stop at the AVEGA/HIV clinic in Rwamagana
    en route. Accommodation in twin bedded en-suite rooms at Akagera
    Lodge on a bed and breakfast basis (1 night). Park entry fees, boat trip, lunch and dinner.
    • Thursday, June 18, 2009 – morning game drive followed by private 4x4 jeep transfer to Butare. Accommodation in twin bedded en-suite hotel rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (1 night). Lunch and dinner.
    • Friday, June 19, 2009 – morning visit to the National Museum of
    Rwanda and the Murambi Genocide Memorial with private transport
    included. Afternoon visit to craft making workshops and tour of
    Butare. Late afternoon return to Kigali by private bus. Accommodation in twin bedded en-suite guesthouse rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (1 night). Lunch and dinner.
    • Saturday, June 20, 2009 – morning departure by private bus to Kibuye.
    Afternoon visit to beach and Genocide Memorial. Accommodation in
    twin bedded en-suite hotel rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (1
    night). Lunch and dinner.
    • Sunday, June 21, 2009 – morning boat trip on Lake Kivu. Private bus transfer to Kigali. Accommodation in twin bedded en-suite guesthouse rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (6 nights). Group dinner.
    • Monday, June 22, 2009 – morning volunteer session at Ntarama
    Orphanage (transport provided) or at Solace Learning Centre. Group
    lunch.
    • Tuesday, June 23, 2009 to Friday, June 26, 2009 – morning volunteer sessions as above. Afternoon visit to Solace projects with transport provided. Group lunch and dinner.
    • Saturday, June 27, 2009 – morning in Kigali. Group lunch. Late
    afternoon private bus transfer to Musanze. Accommodation in twin
    bedded en-suite hotel rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (7 nights). Group lunch and dinner.
    • Sunday, June 28, 2009 – morning volcano walk or optional Gorilla
    tracking (additional cost - to be paid for separately). Afternoon visit to
    local centre for the hearing impaired – transport provided. Group
    lunch and dinner.
    • Monday, June 29, 2009 – Thursday, July 2, 2009 – volunteer projects at centre for the hearing impaired and teaching English at a local nursery school. Students will be split into two groups and will spend two days at each location. Lunch, dinner and private bus transportation provided.
    • Friday, July 3, 2009 – Full day spent at centre for the hearing impaired and local nursery school participating in sporting activities. Lunch, dinner and private bus transportation provided.
    • Saturday, July 4, 2009 – afternoon private bus transfer to Kigali.
    Accommodation in twin bedded en-suite guesthouse rooms on a bed and breakfast basis (6 nights). Lunch and dinner provided.
    • Sunday, July 5, 2009 – free day. Lunch and dinner provided.
    • Monday, July 6, 2009 – Thursday July 9, 2009 – 4 days spent
    volunteering at Coeur Joyeux in Remera. Lunch, dinner and private
    bus transportation provided.
    • Friday, July 10, 2009 – depart for the U.S.
