PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

We believe that the opportunity to spend a semester abroad is one of the most exciting ways to learn. The Asian Pacific Rim is one of the most dynamic areas of the world and is likely to be of strategic economic importance to America's future.
Given its growing importance as well as our lengthy, and sometimes violent history with this part of the world, we believe that American students need to understand the people and cultures of Asia. We can think of no better way to learn than by visiting Asia and living with its people.
Who Should Go?
Applicants come from a wide range of academic disciplines and share a common interest in what happens in the Pacific Rim. Students should be prepared to share a fascinating academic as well as personal adventure!
Where Will We Go?
While in China, we will be hosted by Shandong University in Jinan. We will visit Beijing and walk on China's Great Wall and will walk the streets of one of the world's largest cities, Shanghai.. We will also visit the birthplace of China's best known philosopher, Confucius, as well as one of the most holy mountains in all of China, Tai Shan.
While in Vietnam, we will live and study in Hanoi, see Ho Chi Minh memorial and the old French colonial parts of the capitol, and visit Da Nang, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
We will start the program with one to two weeks of pre-departure orientation meetings in Santa Barbara before taking off to China.
