PROGRAM DIRECTORS

Dr. Matthew Mooney earned his B.A. in English Literature from UCLA and completed his doctoral work in U.S. and World History at UC Irvine, where he studied under renowned China scholars Kenneth Pomeranz (The Great Divergence: China, Europe, and The Making of the Modern World Economy, by Kenneth Pomeranz) and R. Bin Wong (China Transformed: Historical Change and the Limits of European Experience.) He spent much of summer 2007 in China with SBCC Global Studies professor and founder of the college’s China-Vietnam Study Abroad program, Dr. Peter Haslund, and he is eager to return to Asia as co-director of the program with Dr. Yonemura in Fall 2008. Dr. Mooney will be teaching a course on Modern East Asia (with a particular focus on China’s relationship with the West since 1800) as well as History 115, The Vietnam Wars.

Dr Ayanna. Yonemura was born in Japan and grew up in Germany and Sacramento. She earned a B.A. in German Studies from UC Santa Cruz then her M.A. in African Studies and Ph.D. in Urban Planning from UCLA. She has been a Fulbright Fellow in Germany where she taught anthropology at Frankfurt University and in Eritrea, East Africa, where she taught world history. At SBCC, Dr. Yonemura is a professor of Ethnic Studies; her courses include immigration, racism, Asian American Studies and Black Studies.
