2009 Wrapup: Alvarez, Crawford make All-WSC

Alvarez, Crawford make all-conference
After a rough start, SBCC bounced back to play nearly .500 ball in its last 25 games of the 2009 softball season. At Christmas break, a month before the season started, Vaqueros lost seven players who either transferred to four-year schools or decided to concentrate on their studies.
"That's the transition that most community colleges go through," noted 12th-year coach Paula Congleton. "One year a team can be on top and going to the playoffs, the next you're fifth in the conference."
Sophomore catcher Sonja Crawford and freshman third baseman Bianca Alvarez were second-team All-WSC choices. Crawford, a former San Marcos High star, led the team with three homers while Alvarez hit .350.
On March 29, the Vaqueros erupted for 25 runs and 26 hits on the second day of their Bash at the Beach tournament. Sierra Van Olphen went 5-for-7 on the day and nearly hit for the cycle in a 17-5 rout of El Camino. Four days later, SBCC knocked off first-place Moorpark 3-2 on the road.
"From the first day of practice to the last, the players put the team first," Congleton added. "They worked hard each day and as the season progressed many of them became better students of the game. The young ladies showed character, commitment and loyalty as the team grew stronger with pride."
Seven players are slated to return next year: Bryanna Monelo, Bianca Alvarez, Amanda Sharp, Kellee Venturi, Lauren Gniadek, Lauren Takayesu, and Becky Abbott.
"Once again, Bill Hilliard and Allison Slade and I are continuing our recruiting," said Congleton. "We have some very exciting new players coming in next year."
