Psychology Department

Psychology is the study of human and animal behavior, mental processes and social interactions. It is a scientific discipline concerned with the advancement of basic knowledge and also with the application of this knowledge to practical situations. The broad range of interests represented in psychology includes child and adult development, psychological health and stress, perception, learning, memory, cognition, intelligence, motivation and emotion, human relations, abnormal behavior and human potentials.

The Psychology curriculum at Santa Barbara City College is designed to provide students with courses needed to prepare for transfer to a university as a Psychology major. The Department offers courses which are a valuable part of a general education, and that provide support and ancillary skills for many professions that deal with humans. The courses offered also include psychological knowledge that is applicable to the challenges and hopes of daily life.

Students who complete the Psychology major are prepared to enter a variety of career fields and/or graduate programs depending upon their goals and additional specialized training. Additional information about careers in psychology may be obtained from the American Psychological Association.
