October 7-9, 2009: Strengthening Student Success Conference
The Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges presents a conference on strengthening student success. Please visit RP's event page for more details.

This event will take place at the San Francisco Airport Marriott in Burlingame, CA, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on October 7 through October 9, 2009.

The Strengthening Student Success conference provides a unique opportunity for a wide cross-section of people - including faculty, deans, program directors, student services staff, professional development leadership, researchers, and planners - to gather and brainstorm ways to strengthen institutional effectiveness and student learning. The 2009 conference will explore using evidence to improve practice, as well as the integration of curriculum with basic skills, student services, CTE, and college institutional effectiveness structures.

BSI Spring Regional Workshops: "Promoting the Success of Students with Basic Skills Needs: Creating and Sustaining Effective Programs"
The Basic Skills Initiative of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges presents a workshop series. Please visit the BSI's workshop page for further information.

The spring 2009 workshops took place on these dates:

Bay Area Regional: April 23-24, 2009 at Canada College, Redwood City, CA
Central/Northern California Regional: April 30-May 1, 2009 at Sacramento Hilton Arden West, Sacramento, CA
Southern CA Regional: May 7-8, 2009, Los Angeles Mission College, Sylmar, CA
First year experience programs, tutoring programs, and cross curricular programs (e.g., Writing Across the Curriculum, Learning Communities, CTE and basic skills infusions) have proven to be effective ways of promoting the success of students with basic skills needs. The Spring 2009 Regional Workshops focused on these three types of programs and the different approaches used by colleges in your region. Teams from California colleges learned about the challenges in starting and sustaining such a program and, more importantly, the rewards of establishing programs appropriate for a campus. College teams worked with leaders of established successful programs to assess the needs of their campus and devising a workable plan to address those needs.
