Vocational Nursing Program Information

Program Accreditation

  1. The VN program is accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
  2. Students with varying educational and experiential backgrounds are accepted.
  3. Credit may be granted on an individual basis for prior experience and education.

Length of program
The LVN program is 3 semesters, with no summer session.

Approximate weekly schedule
MTW (all semesters) 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
ThF (1st semester) 6:45 a.m.– 1:30 p.m.
ThF (2nd/3rd semesters) 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Classes are taught at the college all day on Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning
  • Experience on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday is in local hospitals and agencies.
  • Practice in the College Nursing Laboratory is on a scheduled and walk-in basis.

Estimated Cost
Students must register for all courses and pay college fees, purchase uniforms, nursing shoes, equipment, textbooks and course printed material. Students will provide their own transportation to and from clinical agencies and the college. In the third semester, students will need to pay for state licensing, exam, and fingerprint fees.


Financial Aid
A variety of scholarships, grants and loans are also available to students. Information and applications are available from the Financial Aid Office (Student Services Building). Early inquiry is important because of early application deadlines.

Information for students Impaired by Alcoholism, Drug Abuse & Emotional Illness

Any SBCC Nursing Student whose function is impaired by alcoholism, drug abuse, aberrant or disruptive behavior will be urged to seek treatment and will be dismissed from the program should the alcoholism, drug abuse or aberrant behavior continue. If, at any time, the student’s conduct, or physical or emotional health is such that she/he is a potential threat to the well being of patients, the student will be dismissed form the program.

The Board of Vocational Nurse/Psychiatric Technician Examiners states that applicants for licensure impaired by the illness of alcoholism, drug abuse, or emotional illness and who do not seek treatment may be prevented from obtaining a California license to practice nursing. Licensed nurses who refuse to seek treatment are subject to disciplinary action.
