Teaching Experience
I have been teaching in the ADN Program since 1993. My lecture content has consisted of Acute and Chronic Oxygen Needs, Fluids and Electrolytes, Advanced Skills, Venipuncture and Pharmacology. The areas that I teach students clinically have included telemetry, ICU, CCU, Emergency Room, and the Oncology unit at Cottage Hospital. Prior to teaching at SBCC, I taught graduate students at UCLA as an Assistant Clinical Professor. I am also a National Spokesperson for Women Heart: A National Coalition of women with heart disease. I conduct community and nursing seminars to help prevent heart disease in women.
Professional Experience
Prior to teaching at SBCC, I had a Nursing Consultant Practice in collaborative private practice with a Cardiologist for ten years. While in that practice, I carried his caseload of patients, as well as coordinated multiple research studies for upcoming cardiovascular drugs with pharmaceutical companies. I have been a guest lecturer to many community organizations to promote cardiovascular health and womens cardiovascular health issues. I also spent many years educating cardiac patients to exercise, and coordinated the Palos Verdes Cardiac Marathon Team. It was a true joy exercising with these patients whom had previous myocardial infarctions and open-heart surgeries. We shared many victories and defeats, both on the track and in the emergency room.
Personal Statement
I hope to bring into the lives of the students that I teach the enthusiasm and joy that I have while practicing nursing. I have had both traditional RN roles and non-traditional RN roles. I try to inspire the students to think about all the positive aspects of our profession, while at the same time, deal with the serious issues of our role. I take my nursing position as nursing educator very seriously; yet try to find the interesting, fun methods to teach difficult topics. Even though I enjoy teaching with all the high technology equipment, I also want to ensure that the patients psychosocial needs are being met. In the hospital setting, I will often refer back to the bottom line that I learned in nursing school, "Remember, there is a patient attached to all that high tech equipment, and remember to care for that patient as if he or she is someones mother or father!"
