Concluding a nationwide search, the Santa Barbara Community College District Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Lori Gaskin, Ph.D., as Superintendent/President. Dr. Gaskin will start her new position effective July 1, 2012.  Dr. Jack Friedlander, Santa Barbara City College Executive Vice President, has served as Acting Superintendent/President since July 2011.

Dr. Gaskin currently is President of West Valley College in Saratoga, California.  Prior to her appointment to that position in August 2009, she served in a number of academic leadership positions at Lake Tahoe Community College, including Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Services and Dean of Instruction.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Gaskin join SBCC,” said Dr. Peter Haslund, SBCC District Board of Trustees President.  “She has a very strong track record in higher education as a faculty member, an administrator, and college president.”  He added, “SBCC, as with all community colleges in the state, is facing difficult economic challenges ahead.  Dr. Gaskin has extensive experience in leading West Valley College through a re-organization period in an open and collaborative manner while never losing sight of the mission – and the heart – of what the college represents to its students and the community. I am confident she will bring that same passion and skill set to SBCC.”

“I feel honored to be named Superintendent/President of Santa Barbara City College,” said Dr. Gaskin. “The foundation of excellence that is the essence of SBCC and permeates every element of the institution, the synergy that is clearly evident amongst the SBCC family, and the opportunity to be a part of the students’ educational journey at SBCC all inspire me to serve this extraordinary institution.”  She added, “In this time of challenge and change, I see the present and future for Santa Barbara City College brimming with potential, opportunity, and continued distinction.”

Dr. Gaskin began her career in the California Community College System 31 years ago as a part-time faculty member at Barstow College. Academically trained as a fluvial geomorphologist, she discovered her true calling very quickly as a community college earth science teacher. As a tenured faculty member at Barstow College, Dr. Gaskin taught in the fields of geography and geology and served in numerous faculty leadership roles before migrating north in 1992 to Lake Tahoe Community College.

Dr. Gaskin holds a B.A. degree and M.A. degree in Geography from the University of California,Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Nevada,Reno. Her dissertation research focused on mission accretion within the California Community College system.

Dr. Gaskin’s professional involvement includes state and regional activities. She is a member of the Community College League of California’s Advisory Committee on Educational Services. She recently coordinated the annual conference for Northern California Chief Executive Officers and frequently co-presents at statewide conferences on faculty, staff, and student roles in participatory governance.

Dr. Gaskin served two terms as the statewide president of the California Community Colleges Chief Instructional Officers organization and, in this capacity, worked collaboratively with key stakeholders to further the academic priorities of the system’s 112 colleges. She has served on numerous state-level committees and presented on a range of educational topics. Dr. Gaskin has been a member of seven comprehensive accreditation teams for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges as a peer evaluator in the accreditation process. In the community, she is a member of the Rotary Club of Saratoga.

In the process to recruit a new superintendent/president, the SBCC District Board of Trustees was assisted by a search committee made up of college administrators, managers, classified staff, students, a representative for the Foundation for SBCC, and community members (SBCC Continuing Education Division and at-large). In addition to interviews, the four finalists participated in two public forums on April 13 and April 19 on the SBCC campus.
