Accreditation Reaffirmed for Santa Barbara City College
Santa Barbara City College received reaffirmation of its accreditation status from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) earlier this month.
The Commission highlighted several areas where SBCC continues to demonstrate excellence. In particular, SBCC received 11 commendations including praise for “developing and sustaining an impressive array of coordinated academic, student support, and learning resources to meet the diverse educational needs of students, including the Transfer Achievement Program, the Transfer Academy, Guardian Scholars, the Veterans Support Program, the iPath Program, and the Express to Success Program.” SBCC was also commended for having innovative learning support services, including the Luria Library and the Cartwright Learning Resources Center.
In addition to the praise SBCC received regarding its educational programs, the Commission also highlighted areas where organizationally, SBCC excels. The College was commended for being a leader in technology, conservation efforts during severe drought conditions, and for SBCC’s commitment to fiscal transparency.
The accreditation process is conducted every six years not only to evaluate the quality of the institution, but also to encourage institutional improvement. The Commission outlined five recommendations for the College, which are intended to guide the institution in improving educational programs and services. The Commission recommended process improvements primarily related to personnel evaluations and Distance Education programs. “SBCC has already begun addressing the recommendations from the Commission to further improve our educational programs and internal processes” stated President Lori Gaskin. The Commission requested a follow-up report to update it on progress made related to its recommendations.
“SBCC is dedicated to the success of each student. We are proud that the Commission recognized that we continue to be an institution whose hallmarks are educational excellence and student achievement” said SBCC President Lori Gaskin.
