TEA FIRE. We extend our sympathies to all members of the community, including our campus family, who lost their homes and/or personal belongings in the Tea Fire or knew someone who did. The SAVE Employee Assistance Program is available to help SBCC faculty and staff in need of counseling services We will share information about efforts to assist fire victims as we learn about them.
MacARTHUR FELLOWS PRESENTATION. On Fri., Nov. 14, Dr. Angela Belcher and Dr. Yoky Matsuoka, two of SBCC’s most illustrious alumni and recipients of the renowned MacArthur Fellows Program, discussed their ground-breaking scientific research with a campus audience at the Garvin Theatre. Dr. Belcher is professor of material science and engineering and bioengineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A member of the Santa Barbara City College Class of 1989, she was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2004 for her innovative work in nanotechnology. Dr. Matsuoka is associate professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is a member of the Santa Barbara City College Class of 1991 and was named a 2007 MacArthur Fellow for her pioneering research in neurobotics. Often referred to as “genius grants,” the MacArthur Fellows Program is one of the world’s most prestigious academic appointments. Awarded with an unrestricted $500,000 stipend paid over five years, annual recipients -- who represent all disciplines -- must demonstrate exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances, and potential for subsequent creative work. After their presentations at the Garvin Theatre, Dr. Belcher and Dr. Matsuoka spent time talking with guests, including a number of SBCC students in academic-related disciplines. The lectures were videotaped and will be available at a later date for checkout from the Learning Resource Center. The program also will air locally on Channel 21.
LAST FALL PRESIDENT’S CHAT ON DECEMBER 2. Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban will host the last of three Fall open forums on Tues., Dec. 2 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in A 217 on East Campus. There is no prescribed agenda, and Dr. Serban welcomes hearing from students, faculty and staff regarding any topics of interest or concern.

EMPOWERING THE DEAF. The SBCC School of Modern Languages and the American Sign Language Program will present “Empowering the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community through Education and Advocacy” on Mon., Nov. 17 from 6:30 -7:30 p.m. at the Fé Bland Forum on West Campus. The speaker will be Richard Ray, Deaf Services Coordinator for the City of Los Angeles Department on Disability. The current president of the California Association of the Deaf and chair of the National Emergency Number Association (9-1-1) Accessibility Committee, Mr. Ray is well-known for his advocacy work on behalf of the deaf and hard of hearing community
STUDY ABROAD IN RWANDA/UGANDA. On Tues., Nov. 18, students are invited to attend an informational meeting for the four-week Study Abroad program in Rwanda/Uganda: Summer 2009. The program will be held from 1 – 2 p.m. in the Communication Lab (1st floor of BC Building, West Campus). STIRRING THE POT. The Theatre Arts Department will present a showcase of their talented students in “Stirring the Pot,” a performance of four Latin American one-act plays, Tues.-Sat., Nov 18-22, in the Jurkowitz Theatre. Directed by Katie Laris, “Stirring the Pot” is comprised of four one-act plays written by South American playwrights and translated by Gerardo Luzuriaga and Robert S. Rudder. The plays will be “The Story of the Man Who Turned into a Dog” by Osvaldo Dragún, “R.I.P,” by José Martínez Queirolo, “March” by Alberto Adellach, and “The Orgy” by Enrique Buenaventura. Performances are Nov. 18-22, Tuesday through Saturday @ 8 p.m., Saturday matinee @ 2 p.m. (This performance will be live-captioned for the hearing-impaired). MINI-JOB FAIR. The Career Center will host a Mini-Job Fair on Wed., Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on West Campus. These are great opportunities to check out employment if you need extra money for the holidays. THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT. Did you know that nicotine is more addictive than heroin and cocaine? Thursday, November 20 is the Great American Smoke Out and it's your opportunity to join with literally millions of other smokers in saying "no thanks" to cigarettes for 24 hours! Join Project HOPE (Helping Others through Peer Education) in the Campus Center from 11a.m. -1 p.m. for a showing of "Pack of Lies" and other information about the dangers of smoking and its effects and how you can join our FREE smoking cessation program on campus through Student Health Services. SKILLS WORKSHOPS. The CLRC Fall 2008 Workshop Series concludes with “MLA and APA Citation” on Thurs., Nov. 20, from 1:00 - 1:50 p.m. in the Cartwright Learning Resource Center. Participants will examine the rules of this academic paper format and learn how to apply them to their own assignments. On Fri., Nov. 21, the Learning Skills Workshops at the Gateway Center will end Fall 2008 with “Stress Management” from 1:00 – 1:50 p.m. at the Gateway to Student Success Center. No pre-registration is necessary for either class. However seating is limited so students are encouraged to arrive early. Attendance forms will be available and verified.
FICTION READING. Author Aimee Bender will conduct a reading of her fiction on Thur., Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. at SBCC’s Atkinson Gallery. Ms. Bender, who lives in Los Angeles and teaches creative writing at USC, is the author of three books and numerous short fiction stories. The Atkinson Gallery is located in the Humanities Building on East Campus.
INTERNATIONAL FASHION FLAIR FUNDRAISER. SBCC Marketing Students, the International Education Office and the Marketing International Fashion Club will host the first annual "International Fashion Flair Show Fundraising Event." on Fri., Nov. 21 in the BC Forum on West Campus. The first fashion show, themed “Eclectic Global Fashion and Style for Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” starts at 5 p.m. The second program beginning at 7:30 p.m. will cover the theme of “Enchanted Global Garments.” All models will be students, and part of the event proceeds will go to scholarships, breast/prostate cancer research, and for the Study Abroad Program to Rwanda. THE DANCE DEPARTMENT will host its Fall Dance Concert on Sat., Nov. 22 at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students. Please call the Theatre box office at 966-4946.
SOCCER TOURNAMENT. Due to the Tea Fire, the first round of the SBCC International Student Soccer Tournament was moved from Sun., Nov. 16 to Sun., Nov. 23. BARBARA CELLS, a SBCC retiree who was living in Apple Valley, passed away on October 16. Barbara started work at the college in 1963 as a clerk/typist and retired on 1988 as a Senior Offset Duplicating Machine Operator with 25 years of service. A former SBCC colleague fondly remembers Barbara as an energetic person who always made service to the college her top priority. THE SANTA BARBARA ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION COALITION will present "Creating Our Environmental Future: Using Imagination and Intelligence for Planetary Survival" on Mon., Nov. 24 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Karpeles Museum at 21 West Anapamu St. in Santa Barbara. Presenter Dr. Ernst von Weizsäcker, Dean of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB, will lecture on creating our environmental future. Research findings offered by a team of engineers and designers committed to environmental sanity have just been published in a new book, Force, edited by Dr. Weizsäcker. Global warming, labor productivity gains through sustainability, and whole systems construction are some of the topics to be discussed by this pioneer in green thinking, member of the Club of Rome, and former member of the German Parliament. His other books include Earth Politics and Factor Five. A reception will follow the lecture at the Institute of World Culture at 1407 Chapala St., also in Santa Barbara. THE JAZZ ENSEMBLE CONCERT will be held on Mon., Nov. 24 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Garvin Theatre. A part of the SBCC Music Department’s Harold Dunn Memorial Concert series, the award-winning Big Bands return with the best of the old and new big band traditions. Tickets are $10 general admission; $6 for students and seniors.

• Tues., Dec. 30 – December payroll checks will be available for pickup between 10 a.m. – noon. Direct deposit checks will be sent to banks for posting on Dec. 30. For employees who request mailing, the December checks will be mailed on Fri., Jan 2, 2009.

SMALL IMAGES. The Atkinson Gallery is currently running the 23rd annual ¡°Small Images¡± exhibition, which opened on Fri., Nov. 14 and will close Fri., Dec. 12. One of the oldest art competitions on the West Coast, this exhibition is juried from hundreds of artists¡¯ submissions that use a variety of media. This year there were 322 entries with 53 selected for the show. Cash awards will be presented the night of the opening. Daniel Dove, a nationally exhibiting painter and Assistant Professor at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, served as this year¡¯s juror. The Atkinson Gallery is located on SBCC¡¯s East Campus on the second floor of the Humanities Building at 721 Cliff Drive in Santa Barbara. WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM WINS REGIONAL COMPETITION. SBCC’s Women’s Golf team recently won the Southern Cal Regional Tournament in Desert Hot Springs. The team shot 340 in the final round and won the six-team competition with 700 strokes. Congratulations
