CONTINUING EDUCATION FORUMS. Continuing Education will host three forums in February inviting community input
for the future direction of Continuing Education courses. The discussions will address
Continuing Education's three core components: Learning for College Preparation, Learning
for Career Preparation, and Learning for Life, which includes the proposed self-supporting
Center for Lifelong Learning. The forums will be held: Wed., Feb. 8 from 6:00 to 7:00
p.m. at the Schott Center; Fri., Feb.10 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Wake Center;
and Mon., Feb. 13 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., also at the Wake Center. For further information,

2011 – 2012 FACULTY EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT: CYNTHIA L. BOWER
Cynthia "Cindy" L. Bower joined SBCC in 2001 and serves as associate professor of
A.D. Nursing. She earned her R.N. license from SBCC; her M.S.N. degree from California
State University, Dominguez Hills; and her B.S. degree from the University of California,Davis.
What teaching tip or counseling advice do you have for other faculty?
COLLABORATE with other faculty members. We are blessed with numerous creative and
talented instructors.
What careers or jobs did you have before working at SBCC?
Of the variety I have had, these stand out as most enjoyable and influential: bank
teller/new accounts officer, summer camp counselor and horseback riding instructor,
executive assistant at a corporate agriculture firm, owned and operated a medical
transcription business, medical surgical hospital nurse, and parent (the most difficult
and rewarding of all)!
Who was your most influential teacher and why?
My husband. He has taught me the joy of embracing all that life has to offer and
graciousness. I continue to learn...
What is your favorite student line or excuse?
It was due when??!!
What are you reading now?
The Future of Life by Edward O. Wilson and What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty
What do you love about your job?
I love working with students, future nurses, who are committed to the profession and
willing to work hard to accomplish their goals. It's also incredibly rewarding to
share deeply touching moments that occur during clinical rotations.
What has been your greatest accomplishment and/or challenge?
Learning to be myself, relax, and have fun in front of a class full of students.
What's one thing most people don't know about you?
It was my own personal medical challenges that guided me into nursing as a career.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Inhaling a great big breath of the ocean, especially in the morning. Savoring a cup
of coffee and breakfast shared with girlfriends.
What historical figure would you most want to meet?
Paul Newman!
What is your favorite place in the world?
So many... waterfalls on Kauai and in the Sierras top the list.
What is your personal motto?
Remember the day's blessings; forget the day's troubles.
WEEKS OF FEBRUARY 7 - 18 - Special Events
ATKINSON GALLERY. Dr. Joy Kunz, SBCC art history instructor, will speak on art abstraction on Wed., Feb. 8 at 4:30
p.m. in Room 111 in the Humanities Building The presentation will be in conjunction
with the first Atkinson Gallery exhibition of 2012, Persistence, which focuses on abstract art in Santa Barbara. The show opened on January 23
and will be on display through February 16. The featured ten artists include: Philip
Argent, Jerrold Burchman, Jane Callister, Dan Connally, Julia Ford, Rollin Fortier,
Mary Heebner, Hugh Margerum, Harry Reese, and Joan Tanner. The Atkinson Gallery is

COACHES VS. CANCER. The SBCC Men's and Women's Basketball teams are hosting a special event on Wed.,
Feb. 8 during regularly scheduled games to raise awareness and funds in the fight
against cancer. The Vaqueros will face off against Allan Hancock College with the
Women beginning at 5:00 p.m. and the Men starting at 7:00 p.m. Event activities include
raffle prizes and a bake sale with performances by South Coast Karate and the SBCC
Music Department. All donations, which will benefit the American Cancer Society, are
welcomed If you would like to donate a gift as part of the raffle, please contact

AN EVENING WITH SOJOURNER KINCAID ROLLE. In honor of Black History Month, the Ethnic Studies Class Women of Color and the American Ethnic Studies Department invite the campus community to "An Evening
Discussion and Reading with Sojourner Kincaid Rolle." The event will take place Thurs.,
Feb. 9 beginning at 6:15 p.m. in A-217. A reception will follow. Ms. Rolle is a California
poet originally from North Carolina whose work has appeared in numerous solo and group
exhibitions, journals, anthologies, and chapbooks. In addition, she is a playwright
and regular magazine contributor. Ms. Rolle has been Writer-in-Residence at the Santa
Barbara Public Library and is a founding member of the Santa Barbara Poetry Festival
Committee. She has initiated and hosted regular poetry readings in Santa Barbara,
including Poet's Night, Reds Hot Poetry, and Open Mics.
INSET. Qualified SBCC students are encouraged to apply for theUC Santa Barbara INSET (Internships
in Nanosystems Science, Engineering and Technology) eight-week Summer Internship Program.
A recruitment presentation will be hosted at SBCC on Fri., Feb. 10, from 2:15 to 3:00
p.m. in PS-130. Students are welcome to attend to learn more about the program. Attendance
is not required to apply but the information is helpful in the application process.

AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS CORNER
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS. The Financial Aid Office has announced that the student scholarship application period
is now open for the 2012-2013 school year. Financial Aid has over 115 different scholarships
and more than $500,000 available to be given out to deserving SBCC students. Faculty
are asked to inform your students of these scholarship applications and encourage
them to apply as soon as possible at www.sbcc.edu/scholarships The scholarship application
period will close on Fri., March 2 at 4:30 p.m., and no late applications will be
accepted.
FACULTY EXCELLENCE AWARDS. The Faculty Recognition Committee and the Academic Senate are seeking nominations
for the 2012- 2013 Faculty Excellence Awards. All full-time and adjunct faculty and
all Continuing Education instructors are eligible to nominate and be nominated for
the award. The deadline for final nomination letters is Thurs., March 15 by 5:00
p.m. If you would like to submit a rough draft for the Faculty Recognition Committee
to review, please submit by Thurs., March 1. For a nomination template and more information,

RICE DIVERSITY AWARDS. The Faculty Recognition Committee is seeking nominations for the John W. Rice Diversity
and Equity Awards. Nominees can be adistrict employee, a district or college, and/or
a program that has made a contribution toward advancing faculty and staff diversity
or student equity in the California Community Colleges. The award is named in honor
of former California Community Colleges Board of Governors' member Dr. John Rice.
The deadline to apply is Thurs., March 15, at 5:00 p.m. If you would like the Faculty
Recognition Committee to suggest ways to strengthen the nomination, you may e-mail

TRACY KOFFORD, SBCC Dance Instructor, participated in the recent Santa Barbara Dance Alliance's
Kinesis 2012, which was described as a "mixed bill of recent contemporary choreography
from regional artists that ranged from ballet to modern to jazz to Afro-Brazilian.
ESL Instructor JAALA THIBAULT wrote a personal account titled "A Teacher's Learning Curve in Kabul (Afghanistan)", which was posted on the New York Times web site on January 30, 2012. Jaala taught English and trained teachers at Kabul Education University in 2010 and 2011 as part of the English Language Fellows Program under the State Department. In addition to teaching at SBCC, she now returns intermittently to Afghanistan as an English-language specialist (also with the State Department) to conduct teacher-training workshops.

JULIET CHAN, a student in SBCC's HIT AS degree program, was awarded a $1,000 merit scholarship
from the American Health InformationManagement Association (AHIMA) Foundation. Representing
more than 63,000 specially educated health information management professionals in
the United States and around the world, AHIMA is committed to promoting and advocating
for high quality research, best practices and effective standards in health information
and to actively contributing to the development and advancement of health information
professionals worldwide.
IN PASSING
ALFONSO "AL" HERNANDEZ, retiree and professor emeritus, passed away on January 19. Al started at SBCC in
1967 and taught Spanish for 33 years before retiring in 2000. The campus community
is invited to a graveside service that will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara,
on Fri., Feb. 10 at 1:00 p.m. In addition to teaching Spanish, Al served as chair
of SBCC's Foreign Languages Department for many years and co-founded the Ethnic Studies
Program. He also developed the Study Abroad Program to Salamanca, Spain. Al is survived
by his wife of 52 years, two children and two grandchildren. Donations in lieu of
flowers may be made to a favorite charity or organization in Al's memory.
SBCC student IAN SANCHEZ died unexpectedly on January 20. In his honor, the college will host a flag-lowering ceremony on Wed. Feb. 8, at noon in front of the Luria Library. The entire campus community is invited to attend. Ian had been an ongoing SBCC student since fall 2008 and was enrolled in classes for spring 2012. His declared major was computer science. In addition to attending college, Ian worked full-time for Fresco's Café in Goleta. Ian is survived by his brother and sister who live in Santa Barbara and by additional family who reside in Mexico.
