AWARDS CORNER
CALL FOR EXEMPLARY PROGRAM NOMINATIONS. The Faculty Recognition Committee is now accepting nominations for the Exemplary Program Award. The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) presents Exemplary Program Awards to as many as six programs from across the state at its January meeting. The Board of Governors established the Exemplary Program Award in 1991 to recognize outstanding community college programs and the Foundation for California Community Colleges will again fund the award. As many as two California community college programs will receive cash awards of $4,000 and up to four programs will receive honorable mention plaques. This award offers an excellent opportunity for our college to showcase exceptional programs. The theme for 2011-2012 is "Student Success: Programs Engaging First-year Students". The focus of the award will be on those programs that engage and serve incoming first-year students to provide them with services and/or instruction tailored to identify their needs and prepare them in ways that increase student retention and persistence. Innovation, integration and adaptation based upon sound research are the keystones to successful applications. All members of the SBCC community are encouraged to nominate a program that meets the criteria. For more information, contact Laura Welby at welby@sbcc.edu. The deadline is Thurs., Sept. 29.

CALL FOR HAYWARD NOMINEES. The Faculty Recognition Committee is now accepting nominations for the Hayward Award for Excellence in Education. All faculty members, including full time and adjunct, both inside and outside of the classroom, are eligible for consideration, including previous nominees who did not receive the award. The awards, named in honor of former California Community Colleges' Chancellor Gerald C. Hayward, recognizes community college faculty members who demonstrate the highest level of commitment to their students, college, and profession. Recipients are nominated by their local peers and selected as winners by representatives of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. In addition to excellence in teaching, they must have a record of outstanding performance in professional activities, as well as a record of active participation on campus. Four recipients, each from different areas of the state, are selected and honored annually at the March Board of Governors' meeting. A $1,250 cash award and plaque is presented to each recipient. All faculty members are encouraged to nominate a faculty member who meets the criteria. For more information please contact Laura Welby at welby@sbcc.wsu.
