NOTEWORTHY
EXPRESS TO TRANSFER GRANT.    In September the U.S. Department of Education awarded SBCC a federal five-year grant totaling $4 million to support programs to increase the number of associate degree graduates who transfer to four-year institutions in the fields of science, engineering and math. The Hispanic Serving Institution Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (HSI: STEM) grant places special emphasis on Hispanic and low-income students and is the single largest in the college's history. SBCC will use the funding to develop and implement the Express to Transfer Program which will provide clearly defined pathways for students to enroll as science, engineering or math majors, complete their associate degree and transfer requirements, and successfully transfer to a four-year university in a STEM discipline.   Students accepted into the Express to Transfer Program will be expected to complete their lower-division transfer requirements in two to three years. The grant also will help develop a comparable program for non-STEM majors. Acting Superintendent/President Dr. Jack Friedlander, Acting Executive Vice President Marilynn Spaventa, and Senior Director of Institutional Assessment, Research and Planning Robert Else were lead writers of the grant along with substantial input from the STEM faculty, counselors and staff. Mathematics Professor Ignacio Alarcón will serve as program director. For more details, please go to: http://www.sbcc.edu/newsandevents/pressreleases/2011september23_express_transfer_nr.php
