NOTEWORTHY
NEW TRANSFER AGREEMENT. Antioch University Santa Barbara (AUSB) and SBCC signed an official agreement on Wed., Nov. 16 formalizing a unique student transfer
arrangement between the two institutions. AUSB's Bridge Program with SBCC permits
SBCC students to transfer up to three years of college credit to AUSB, one full year
more than is accepted in transfer units to most four-year colleges and universities.
After transfer, students may need to complete as little as one year of study at Antioch
in order to complete their BA degree. The "80-40" program provides a cost-effective
means of completing the college degree, allowing students to complete as many as 80
units at a community college and the remaining 40 credit hours at AUSB. The Bridge
program allows students to stay in Santa Barbara, rather than leave the area, to complete
their bachelor's degree. SBCC's Transfer Center and AUSB's Office of Admissions work
closely with these students in developing an academic transfer plan, including financial
aid that best suits their needs. In addition to the Bridge Program, SBCC and Antioch
have a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) that ensures that qualified SBCC students
are automatically guaranteed admission to any Antioch concentration.
LIBRARY GRANT. SBCC's Luria Library has added a library resident position and expanded hours of operation, thanks to a $43,000 grant from the Luria Foundation. Through the grant, the library resident position will be filled on a yearly basis by a college graduate who has completed his or her master's degree program in library and information science or library science in the last two years when applying at SBCC. Molly Ridge, a graduate of the University of Washington, is filling the position for 2011-2012. The library also will expand its weekend hours of operation to include Saturday. In the past, the library was only open during the school week. Through the generosity of community donors, Sunday hours were added four years ago. "Thanks to the Luria Foundation, we are now able to open the library seven days a week, which is a significant accomplishment in this tight economy," said Kenley Neufeld, library director. Library Hours (when college is in session): Monday- Thursday: 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Saturday: Noon - 5:00 p.m., and Sunday: 10 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.

DIVING BELL. The Purisima Diving Bell on the Maritime Museum's patio went on public display this month after a one-year
stay at SBCC's Marine Diving Technologies' facilities where it was restored to its
former grandeur. SBCC Professor Don Barthlemess was instrumental in the arrangements to have the world's first commercial diving
bell brought from Florida to Santa Barbara. The Maritime Museum's new indoor exhibit
features a scaled model, photos and video about the Purisima Bell. Don said, "We
are very proud of the bell, and the college's role in restoring it, as it shows the
public about Santa Barbara's diving roots and honors the local diving pioneers who
built and dove with the system in the 1960's making Santa Barbara the birthplace of
deep-water commercial diving."

SBCC Coach Scott Fickerson has been named Western State Conference Coach of the Year for men's cross country.
Scott helped guide the Vaqueros to fifth place in the WSC, 14th in the Southern Cal
Championships and 16th in the State Championships in Fresno. "We finished strong and
kept running faster and faster," said Scott, who just completed his fourth year as
coach of the men's and women's teams. "We jumped over a lot of teams." He added, "This
award is a testament to all the hard work and effort that the men put in all season
leading to their great performances at the So Cal Meet and State Championships." (Contributor – Dave Loveton)
Peter Georgakis, professor of mathematics, recently received the Presidential Award by the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. The award is given every other year and goes to an individual for outstanding contributions and dedicated service to two-year mathematics education. Peter, who joined the SBCC faculty in 1985, is a 1997 Hayward Award Recipient, which is the highest award given to a California Community College instructor, and was named the Faculty Lecturer at SBCC in 2005.

PROGRAMMING TEAM WINS REGIONAL AWARD. SBCC's two programming teams, SBCC Alpha and SBCC One, competed in the 2011 Southern California Regionals for the International Collegiate
Programming Competition held November 12 at Riverside Community College. SBCC Alpha
won honors as the top-scoring two-year college in the competition. The team, consisting
of Roxanne Brittain, Daniel Guimaraes and Amy Drafahl, ranked 20th overall, scoring higher than all teams from UCSB, UC Irvine, Cal Poly
Pomona, San Diego State University, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Fullerton, the University
of Nevada-Las Vegas, CSU Dominguez Hills, Azusa Pacific University and others. This
is the second year in a row that SBCC has been ranked the top two-year college. SBCC
One, consisting of Jason Howell, Jamie Kroll and Aaron Lamar, also competed successfully, outranking teams from UC Riverside, CSU Fullerton and
Moorpark College. The ICPC challenges three-person student teams to solve a set of
eight programming problems in five hours. This year, 77 teams from 27 institutions
from the Southern California area competed. SBCC's success in pitting themselves against
students from world-class universities is a testament to the hard work, determination
and intellect of its students. And special thanks go out to the computer science faculty
and TAs (Rob Dependahl, Jackie Kuehn, Dr. Dean Nevins, Stephen Strenn, Soheyla Javanbakht, and David Gowans) for their guidance and support.
ADN STUDENTS VOLUNTEERING IN COMMUNITY. SBCC students currently enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program recently volunteered at Project Healthy Neighbors, an annual three-day wellness program for Santa Barbara's homeless. This year's event, which was themed "Honor Life", was held November 14 – 16. More than 25 local health and social service agencies and 100 volunteers administered physical wellness services as well as provided social services and counseling to an estimated 600 people.
SBCC midfielder Jordan Tabor was named Athlete of the Week on November 21 by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. The 6-foot freshman from England helped the Vaqueros beat L.A. Harbor 2-1 in their Southern Cal Regional men's soccer playoff opener on November 19. (Contributor – Dave Loveton)
FOUR VAQUEROS ON ALL-APC SQUAD. Manny Hernandez, a sophomore linebacker for SBCC, has been chosen first-team All-American Pacific Conference in football. Three other Vaqueros made the elite squad. Sophomore tackle Kenny Ruiz and freshman tight end Tyson Heller were second-team offensive picks. Freshman safety Mitch Nelson was a second-team defensive choice. (Contributor – Dave Loveton)
