CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR. Olga Gonzales was named the Classified Employee of the Year at the April 28 monthly meeting of the SBCC District Board. According to her
nominator, Olga, who works as a Technology Services Specialist III in the Information Technology Department, is considered
one of several ‘fix-it’ people at SBCC. “She is the hub of the “Help Desk” and can get to the root of all problems. If she

when solving a problem – she won’t leave you hanging. Olga always carries herself with grace, dignity and professionalism
on and off campus. She is an excellent lead and is protective of her team. She is also a fierce defender of the college computer
users and watches to be sure they are taken care of first. Olga is an excellent proponent of education, receiving her degree
from SBCC. She continues to take classes when she can and encourages her co-workers to attend as well. She is extremely devoted
to her family, putting her daughter through college while caring for her 86-year-old mother. She is a dedicated member of
her community church and also volunteers and fundraises for a local non-profit ballet school.” Olga will receive a $500 honorarium

SHPE TAKES TOP CLUB HONORS. SBCC’s student club SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) Ingenium was named as the top college club of the year by the Student Senate. The selection was based on the club’s exceptional track record of campus and professional participation and fundraising efforts. During the year, club officers and members attended a number of regional and national conferences sponsored by SHPE. SHPE Ingenium also hosted three separate fundraising events to raise the awareness of engineering and science to fellow SBCC students, high school students and elementary school-age girls. Officers for the 2010-2011 year were: Neftali Aguilera, President; Juan Zepeda, Vice President; Victoria Melero, Secretary; Luis Garfias, Treasurer; Carolina Guerrero, Historian; and Noe Gonzalez, Student Representative. Upon learning of the award, Virginia Estrella, club advisor said, “I really feel that the club is deserving of the award because the students worked well as a team and were able to create a wonderful energy for all the tasks, fundraisers, and events.” She added,” We had a great president, Neftali, a supportive executive board (officers), and active members, and their efforts ultimately led to this award.”
COMMENCEMENT. SBCC will host its 62nd annual Commencement ceremony on Fri., May 20 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Student Services’ Plaza on East Campus. KUDOS
(Campus)
In honor of National Poetry Month in April, the Cartwright Learning Resource Center sponsored a collaborative poem game. Each section of the following poem
was contributed by a different member of the SBCC campus community during the month. The words for each section were taken
from the respective poem of the day which was posted in the Writing Center. Thanks to Nina Mahaffey for coordinating this
activity.
Poetry Month Community Poem:
One’s Soul Becomes a Brutal Argument
Great nature keeps me steady,
I learn by going there.
I’m waiting with the mollusks,
autumn light before paradise rang loudest,
the oceans and heavens ajar,
Noise and Music, overbearing—
a light, decision, and even more.
Come to me, Poetry,
at night outside at the edge of the light,
answering me to give the world
something of carefulness.
Cognizant of oil, kiss the earth—
the final flight unreal solidity—
judges change honorably,
while unremembered ghosts kissed
and vanished in the quiet winter rain.
Don’t pretend to actually miss
language that softly lost you
when your window of play ended.
Tragic eyes watch the mysticism of success:
bright consciousness case
down from massive failure.
Come once, love,
from yonder throng,
once over bone.
Practice losing is no hour badly spent limping,
damnfool sentiencies,
free from patience,
perform live shrieking birds on the earth.
Despair feeds in the presence of grace
and I wake, wild and day-blind.
As if one can imagine shadow as narcosis,
endure true love’s arrow;
the shackles embrace
as the moon will go, and the sun, you, traces.
Leaves lost, embraces gone, stars far, moon falling—Ka
we and love will endure.
I speak of soul: “azure iris!”
and remember the fountain of consciousness.
Poems exist to dispel the lonely secret,
a face, a heart, a star.
