NOTEWORTHY
SBCC LEADERSHIP TRANSITION. On July 29, the SBCC District Board appointed Dr. Jack Friedlander, executive vice president of educational programs, as acting superintendent/president following the announcement that Dr. Andreea Serban was granted a leave of absence through June 30, 2012. On August 16, the college announced that Dean Marilynn Spaventa has been named acting executive vice president.

PICNIC RESCHEDULED. The SBCC Employee Picnic, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, has been moved to Saturday, April 14. 2012. The event will be held at Tucker’s Grove inSanta Barbara and is open to SBCC faculty, regular employees, immediate families and the Board of Trustees. Please plan on joining your colleagues for an afternoon of fun and relaxation including a BBQ meal and activities for both adults and children. More details will follow shortly.

WEEKS OF AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 2
MEDITATION
. For the seventh year, the Luria Library will offer a weekly meditation session designed to help increase mindfulness and reduce stress. The sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 11:15 - 11:45 a.m. in Library Director Kenley Neufeld’s office. Everyone is invited to participate.

FARMERS’ MARKET. Thanks to the students in the Projects in Sustainability class and the Student Sustainability Coalition, the campus community will have the convenience of purchasing local, organic produce every Wednesday on West Campus. Be sure to bring cash and your recyclable bag to visit the vendors who will be set up on Wednesdays in front of the Luria Library on West campus from
11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

SCHALL CAREER CENTER. The Schall Career Center helps SBCC students and potential students identify and meet their career goals. The counselors at the Center can help students choose a major, explore career options, find a job or internship, and sign-up for a work-experience course or a course in career or personal development. ATKINSON GALLERY
The Atkinson Gallery is located on the second floor of the Humanities Building on East Campus.  The gallery hosts six exhibtions of contemporary art each academic year featuring a wide range of stayles and mediums and culminating in the spring with the Annual Student Exhibition.  Hours: Monday – Thursday from 10:00 a.m.- 7:00 p.m.; Friday - Saturday from 10:00 a.m.– 4:00 p..

Laura Krifka Opening - The Atkinson Gallery will open the fall exhibition schedule on Fri., August 26 with “Milk and Honey,” a showcase of paintings and sculptures by artist Laura Krifka. Ms. Krifka, who will be teaching in the SBCC Art Department this fall, will present an artist’s lecture on Wed., Sept. 14In describing her work, Ms. Krifka writes, My practice is a mutation of historical propaganda, religious morality and fetishes of Americana magnified to form a disturbing world that reflects the oddity of our own. I create this slippery space using multiple types of media, with an emphasis on painting and sculpture.” Ms. Krifka is an award-winning 2010 MFA graduate of UCSB. Her work has already been shown at the Zrobili Gallery in Chicago and at Beacon Arts in Inglewood (Calif.). She has an upcoming solo exhibition at CB1Gallery in Los Angeles in February 2012.

OF INTEREST
EXPRESS TO SUCCESS. SBCC began the pilot phase of the new “Express to Success Program” (ESP) for students with an orientation and luncheon on Fri., August 19. This fall, approximately 300 students will participate in the accelerated program with newly developed specialized curriculum, counseling, and other resources designed to help them complete their two-year associate degree or transfer requirements in no more than two to three years. Dr. Peter MacDougall, a member of the California Community Colleges’ Board of Governors, co-chair of the statewide Task Force on Student Success, and emeritus SBCC superintendent/president, and Acting Superintendent/President Dr. Jack Friedlander visited orientation workshops and addressed the students at the noon luncheon at the Campus Center. WEEKEND OF WELCOME. Approximately 300 new incoming freshmen and their families attended the first Weekend of Welcome orientation on August 19 – 20 hosted by SBCC’s Outreach and Orientation Department. The two-day event featured a combination of campus tours and workshops along with social mixers and outings. According to Dean Dr. Ben Partee and Coordinator Michael Medel, the feedback from parents and students was extremely positive, and plans are already under way for next year’s event.

EnterpriseLAUNCH. The Scheinfeld Center is offering a new program EnterpriseLAUNCH this fall to help SBCC students start businesses with a social benefit. The non-credit program is open to all students, regardless of their majors. Beginning Fri., Sept. 9, entrepreneur Dr. Jon Anton will meet three hours each week with the class to help them develop and launch their entrepreneurial businesses. These enterprises also will be eligible to participate in the Scheinfeld Center's 2012 New Venture Challenge. Professor of Marine Technology Don Barthelmess has joined the board of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. Don also serves on the board of directors of the Association of Commercial Diving Educators and the Technical Diving Advisory Board for the National Association of Underwater Instructors

Associate Professor of English Dr. Chella Courington and fellow poet Kristen McHenry will have a collection of their works titled Paper Covers Rock & Triplicity: Poems in Threes published on September 30 by Indigo Ink Press. This flip edition combines the work of both poets in one volume. Chella’s Paper Covers Rock is a collection of poems, primarily narrative, which explores coming-of-age as a perpetual transition—birth, death, love, loss, sex, illness and transcendence.

Physical Education Instructor Bonnie Lewis was among the cast of the play The Exonerated which ran in July and August at the Center Stage Theatre in Santa Barbara.

English Skills Instructor Claudia McGarry recently had her second book My Aries Secrets published. The new title is the second in Claudia’s astrology thriller series which she began with My Scorpio Soul. IN PASSING
Instructional Computer Lab Coordinator Steven “Silvy” Silverberg, 58, passed away unexpectedly on Thurs, July 7 in Santa Barbara. A graduate of SBCC’s Computer Network Electronics & Engineering (CNEE) program, Silvy joined the college in May 2001 as a Laboratory Teaching Assistant (LTA) in the Business Division and was reclassified to an ICLC in July 2005. In his honor, his family hosted a memorial celebration of Silvy’s life on Thurs., July 14 on West Campus.
