NOTEWORTHY
SBCC RANKS IN TOP 120 COMMUNITY COLLEGES NATIONWIDE. In its first step to identify the nation’s best community colleges and award $1 million in prize money, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program ranked SBCC as one of the nation’s 120 best community colleges. SBCC was selected from almost 1,200 accredited, public community colleges nationwide. The Aspen Institute now challenges all finalists to compete for the prize funds to be announced in December 2011. Criteria include high standards for learning, college completion without delay, and serving as a training ground for jobs that pay competitive wages.

SBCC Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban said, “Once again, our college is recognized at the national level for our excellent work.” She added, “SBCC is now eligible to submit an application containing detailed data on these criteria. We must demonstrate that we deliver exceptional student results, use data to drive decisions, and use that information to continually improve over time. We will certainly respond to the challenge. Student success and academic excellence are our top priorities.”

The Aspen Prize was announced at the White House Community College Summit hosted by President Barack Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden in October 2010 with the announcement of the top 120 colleges made on April 25. Over the coming five months, an Expert Selection Committee will select eight to 10 finalists, publicizing each finalist institution's achievements broadly this fall. The finalists will be selected in September based on how much students learn, how many complete their programs on time, and how well students do in the job market after graduating. Aspen will conduct site visits to each of the 8-10 finalists in the fall. And, based on the evidence, in December, a prize jury will announce at a highly visible event in Washington, D.C, a winner of the top Prize ($700,000) and two or three runners up (which will each receive $100,000-$150,000).

BUDGET FORUMS. SBCC Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban and Vice President of Business Services Joe Sullivan will conduct two budget forums to update the campus community on the status of the 2010-11 and 2011-2012 college budgets and discuss options and alternatives for the next three fiscal years. They will discuss the current fiscal status of the college, the proposed State budget for 2011-12 and its impact on the college moving forward, scenarios and options for dealing with the additional budget cuts, and outline the draft SBCC tentative budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Date: Mon., May 9, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at ECC 18 (East Campus)
Date: Wed., May 11, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at Wake Center Auditorium

Two forums on different dates and locations are being offered to give the most faculty and staff the opportunity to attend. We encourage everyone to attend one of the meetings as the new budget will have a substantial impact on the college operations and our ability to best serve as many students as financially feasible. WSC SOFTBALL TITLE. KAILEY SNYDER tossed a perfect game on April 21 at Pershing Park and CARLY SMITH hit a home run in the second game as SBCC swept L.A. Pierce to secure the first WSC Gold Division title in its 14-year softball history. The scores were 12 – 0 and 13 – 0 and both games were shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule. The 13 runs were a season high. “The great thing about Kailey’s perfect game is she threw just 46 pitches,” said Coach Paula Congleton. “It’s exciting to win the conference title. I’m so proud of the kids.”

CCCC AWARD. Softball pitcher KAILEY SNYDER was named the California Community College Athletic Association’s Athlete of the Month in March. According to information released by the CCCAA, “Kailey helped vault Santa Barbara City College onto the State scene with an incredible month of March. In 15 games, Kailey went 14-1 in the circle for the Vaqueros, posting six shut-outs, 98 strikeouts, and a 0.89 ERA the second best mark in the entire State.” Kailey was also instrumental in the Vaqueros’ Softball team winning its first WSC Softball title on April 21.

TRACK WSC VICTORIES. KELLI JOHNSON captured the WSC women’s high jump title on April 21 and teammate ELISABETH BRANSGARD won the discus during the WSC Track and Field Prelims at Santa Monica College.
