NOTEWORTHY
RICE DIVERSITY AWARDS. The California Community Colleges Board of Governors named Ignacio Ponce, a full-time faculty member who oversees the American Sign Language (ASL) Program, and the college’s Veterans Support Program coordinated by Magdalena Torres as recipients in two categories of the 2011 John W. Rice Diversity and Equity Award. Ignacio has been responsible for the expansion of the ASL program since his arrival in 2008. Previously the program offered only beginning ASL and had an average of 100 students enrolled. Today, it offers beginning to advanced ASL and has an average of 200 students enrolled. Ignacio has been instrumental in the growth of the award- winning, student-centered ASL Club and served as faculty advisor for three years. He also enhanced the three-day linguistic and cultural ASL Summer Immersion Institute in which all participants, expanded to include campus and community members, communicate only in sign language. Under his leadership and with the help of the ASL Club, SBCC has been offering a variety of events each semester, including the Deaf Panel presentations on a wide range of topics.

The SBCC Veterans Support Program, coordinated by Student Program Advisor Magdalena Torres, assisted 195 full-time and part-time veteran students in the 2009-2010 academic year. In October 2010, the program was recognized as one of the top 101 “Best for Vet” colleges and universities in the U.S. by Military Times EDGE magazine. To raise the visibility of veterans on campus, Magdalena coordinates a number of special events open to the college and community including Veterans Resource Day in November and Recognition of Women Veterans and Women in the Armed Services in March.

The John W. Rice Diversity and Equity Award was established in 2001 to honor a community college staff member, district, college, or program that has made the greatest contribution towards faculty and staff diversity or student equity. The award is named in honor of former California Community Colleges Board of Governors’ member John W. Rice who served on the board from 1992-2000 and was a leader, innovator, and spokesperson for equal employment opportunity and nondiscrimination in the California Community Colleges.

FOUNDATION STUDENT FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN. The Foundation for SBCC currently is conducting the Campaign for Student Success, a comprehensive phone campaign reaching out to the community to raise funds for SBCC students. Money raised will go to students with financial need, offsetting the rising costs of enrollment fees, textbooks, child care, tutoring and overall living expenses, such as rent and transportation. More than 120 volunteers have been recruited by the Foundation to reach out to area businesses and families who have supported or attended SBCC and want to help current and future students succeed. The Winslow Maxwell Charitable Trust is offering a match or 50 cents on the dollar for every donation made now through June 30. The offer lends a sense of urgency and scale to the Campaign for Student Success, as $250,000 must be raised to receive the match. To volunteer or to make a donation, call the Foundation for SBCC at. ext. 2602 or 730-4401.

SBCC PICNIC. Mark your calendars for the SBCC Picnic on Sat., Sept. 24, at Tucker’s Grove in Santa Barbara. We have reserved Kiwanis Meadows from 11:30 until 2:00 that day. This popular event was brought back last fall and more than 300 people turned out for an afternoon of BBQ and relaxation. Once again, SBCC’s Food Services Department will provide the meal and HR is working on another raffle with outstanding prizes. Activities and games for adults and children are also being planned. More details will be announced shortly.
