Financial Assistance Available for SBCC Continuing Education Tuition-Based Courses

July 20, 2010

Santa Barbara City College’s Continuing Education Division will award scholarships to financially needy students for tuition-based courses for the 2010-2011 year beginning with the fall 2010 term. Most Continuing Education classes are state-supported and offered tuition free. However, some classes such as foreign languages, cooking, and other community enrichment classes are not state-supported but are offered for a nominal fee (the majority are in the range of $40 to $80) to cover direct expenses.

“Continuing Education is committed to making sure that our courses are accessible to students, regardless of their financial situations,” said Dr. Ofelia Arellano, Vice President, SBCC Continuing Education.  “Scholarships can make the difference for a person on a limited income who takes a literature or physical recreation class to stay physically fit, mentally active and involved with others.”

The scholarship selection committee is composed of two student representatives, members of the Continuing Education Citizens’ Advisory Council, a Foundation for SBCC representative and two Continuing Education staff members.  The group will give priority consideration to students enrolled in tuition-based courses that are health-related, life/social enrichment, or needed due to special circumstances.

Generous support from the community allows SBCC Continuing Education to fund scholarships and to offer tuition-free certain courses that are no longer eligible for state funding, such as several Physical Education classes for seniors.  For fall 2010, the fees for these Physical Education classes will be covered by donations with the goal to develop new health education courses eligible for state funding by spring 2011.

Current funding for the Continuing Education scholarship fund is $12,500. The fund was created by a combination of community donations and student sponsored fundraising events. If you would like to support the Continuing Education program or this scholarship fund, a donation can be made through the Foundation for SBCC at https://www.sbccfoundation.org/support.asp

Deadline for fall 2010 applications for a scholarship is Monday, August 2.  Registration for fall 2010 begins Monday, August 16. For more information regarding the application process and the list of fall 2010 courses which are tuition-based, please go to: www.sbcc.edu/adulted.  Applications can also be picked up during regular business hours at the Schott Center at 310 West Padre Street or Wake Center at 300 North Turnpike Road, both in Santa Barbara.
