9/22/09
On September 20, 2009, Desmond O’Neill, member of the Santa Barbara Community College District Board of Trustees, received the Jacaranda Award for Community Service from Santa Barbara Beautiful at its 45th annual awards ceremony.
The award was presented to Mr. O’Neill by Dr. Andreea Serban, Superintendent/President of Santa Barbara City College. Mr. O’Neill has served on the SBCC District Board of Trustees since 1994 including two terms as president.
“I can’t think of anyone who deserves this award for community service more than Des,” said Dr. Serban. “SBCC is the single community college for this district and tens of thousands of students come to us each year to pursue their goals of higher education. Our volunteer Board’s leadership and guidance are critical to our success.”
She added, “Des is a true believer in the mission of our college. He has attended countless SBCC meetings and events representing the Board, and his wise and thoughtful counsel, along with his enjoyable dry sense of humor, have been invaluable to us. I thank Santa Barbara Beautiful for acknowledging and recognizing his contributions to our community. Congratulations Des!”
Formed in 1965 by concerned civic leaders, Santa Barbara Beautiful is an organization of volunteers dedicated to beautifying the area in a variety of ways not only by working independently but also by cooperating with city departments, neighborhood associations and other agencies. In addition to annual awards, the group gives monthly awards to single family homes, plants street trees, commemorative trees and markers and stimulates interest in and concern for the environment by actively participating in educational outreach.
