NOTEWORTHY
ACADEMIC SENATE PRESIDENT. Dr. Dean Nevins, Professor of Computer Science, has been elected SBCC’s next Academic Senate president. He will take office as president-elect at the end of the spring semester and serve as president for the 2011-13 term. Dr. Nevins, who has been associated with the college since 1997, received his B.S. degree from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and his M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. from USCB. He will succeed current Academic President Ignacio Alarcón.
PRESIDENT’S CHAT. Superintendent/President Dr. Andreea Serban will host a spring President’s Chat on Tues., April 20 from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. in A 217 on East Campus. There is no prescribed agenda, and Dr. Serban welcomes feedback and questions from faculty, staff and students regarding any college-related topics, issues or concerns. People may come and go during the session as their schedules permit.

TENTS FOR HAITI. SBCC’s chapter of Sigma Chi Eta will complete a fundraising event on Mon.-Wed., April 19-21 to purchase and ship tents to Haiti in partnership with A Home in Haiti campaign. The club will host tables in front of the Luria Library from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. One of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, the earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12 killed more than 220,000 people and left two million homeless. As the rainy season has hit, more than 37,000 people have already been killed in floods and mudslides. Tents are one of the most urgently needed items to provide relief. A standard tent for seven people weights 20 pounds, and shipping costs are roughly $2.50 per pound for shipping to Haiti. SCHEINFELD LECTURER. SBCC’s Scheinfeld Center Enlightened Entrepreneurship Series will host PAMELA LOPKER, founder and president of QAD, on Fri., April 16 from 2:30- 4:30 p.m. at the Fé Bland Forum on West Campus. This event is open to the public and free of charge. However, space is limited and RSVPs are required. To register for the event, please go to: http://scheinfeld.sbcc.edu/events_announcements.html. This program will focus on Pamela Lopker and her "Journey to Success" during a casual chat with Q and A followed by a reception. The event presents a rare opportunity for guests to learn about and interact with a highly successful woman leader, entrepreneur and glass ceiling breaker who founded and runs a software company.
ATKINSON GALLERY. The annual Student Art Exhibition opens on Fri., April 16 from 5 – 7 p.m. with an opening reception. An awards ceremony starts at 6 p.m. This show, juried this year by Dan Connally, a painter and instructor at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies, is always a lively array of styles, media, scale and content. Many of SBCC’s art students have gone on to noted careers in the art world and related creative fields. Artworks are for sale by interested buyers. INTERNATIONAL WEEK (April 17 – 24) is a week-long program of events developed to celebrate the diversity of our campus community. This collaborative program has come together through the efforts of many sponsors and contributions from departments, clubs and different organizations across the SBCC campus and from the Santa Barbara community. There will be daily international food specials and live entertainment at the Campus Center, a Japanese kimono exhibit at the Gourmet Dining Room all week, and the following special events:

PANGEA FEST. In conjunction with Global Youth Service Day and culminating SBCC's International Week, The SBCC Student’s Coalition will host its third Annual PANGAEA FEST: GET GLOBAL MINDED on Sat., April 24, from 1 – 9 p.m. at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium. The SBCC campus and the Santa Barbara Community are invited to learn about how youth of all ages are making a difference in the world locally, nationally, and internationally. Planned activities include
-Local artists performing music with a positive message throughout the day.
-Hands-on activities offered by exhibitors which will teach participants more about the world
-A Talking Tent where participants can learn about some of the world's most pressing issues from people who have lived them.
-The Fair Trade Marketplace where items for sale support local and international communities.
-Local reggae artist Dominic Balli will close the event with his uplifting music and messages of hope.
Participants are encouraged to pack a lunch and/or dinner and enjoy a picnic on the grass. Admission: Adults: $5 /Children 12 and under: free. No charge for parking.

THEATRE ARTS. The Theatre Arts Department will sponsor “Greater Tuna,” a student performance on Wed. and Thurs., April 21 – 22 at 7 p.m. at the Interim Theatre on West Campus. Admission is free. A series of student directed one-acts is scheduled for May 10 -15 at 7 p.m., also at the Interim Theatre.

FREE ELECTRONIC WASTE DROP OFF. The City of Santa Barbara is sponsoring a free electronic waste collection on Fri., April 23 and Sat., April 24 from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Sears parking lot at 3845 State Street in Santa Barbara. All business and consumer electronic devices will be accepted. Computer hard drives will be completely destroyed and recycled according to industry standards. Not accepted: DVDs, CDs, tape cassettes, batteries (of any kind), fluorescent bulbs, toner cartridges, or large appliances. MASTER DANCE CLASS. The SBCC Dance Program will host a special master dance class by Compania Nacional De Danza on Mon., April 26 from 7 -9 p.m. in PE 113 on East Campus.Presented by the Santa Barbara Dance Alliance, the event features one of Europe’s most internationally recognized contemporary dance companies. The group makes its official Santa Barbara debut the following evening on April 27 at the Granada Theatre. SBCC students interested in participating or observing the April 26 master dance class on campus should contact Pamela Lappen, dance instructor, at 892-3732 to reserve their spots.
PRO COURSE. The Professional Development Center will offer the following course in the Spring 2010 Workplace Success Series in March.
- Team Work and Generational Diversity on Tues., April 27 from 8:30 a.m. –4:30 p.m. at the Wake Center, Room 28. Instructor Jill Scala will explore how generations differ in their approaches and attitudes toward work, relationships and teamwork. Participants will learn to motivate, communicate with and work smoothly with individuals across all age group (This is a .5 unit class)

HOME BUYING SEMINAR. The Coastal Housing Partnership is offering a free home buying seminar on Tues., April 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Goleta. Participants can learn how the home loan process works, what you can afford to buy, the value of credit scores, how loans are priced and the types of loans available. The Coastal Housing Partnership also will offer suggestions on you can save money on the up-front cost of your home purchase. DANCE CONCERT. The SBCC Dance Program will present its spring dance concert “Beyond the Words,” on Fri., May 7 at 8 p.m. and Sat., May 8 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Center State Theatre located in the Paseo Nuevo Center in downtown Santa Barbara. Pamela Lappen, concert artistic director and course instructor, will perform a new work “Visions, Dreams, and Memories,” a 30-minute story ballet she choreographed as the culmination of a creative exploration that began with the SBCC dancers last fall. Also presenting new works will be instructors and guest choreographers E. Bonnie Lewis, Kay Fulton and Misa Kelly. Tickets are $22 general, $17 senior, and $12 students. SOMA SHOWCASE. The School of Media Arts will host its annual showcase on Thurs., May 20, from 6-8 p.m. at the Fé Bland Forum on West campus. Themed “100 years of building a better tomorrow,” the event will feature the best student work in graphic design, multimedia, photography, journalism, film and TV production, and film studies (may contain adult content.) FACULTY LECTURER NOMINATIONS. Nominations for the 2010-2011 SBCC Annual Faculty Lecturer are being accepted through Thurs., April 29 at 4 p.m. Paper forms can be submitted via ballot boxes located throughout campus or sent through interoffice mail to Dr. Karolyn Hanna. Electronic nominations should be directed to Dr. Hanna at hanna@sbcc.edu (Please indicate ‘Faculty Lecturer Nomination’ in subject line.) Criteria include outstanding teaching, librarianship or counseling and dedicated service to SBCC. Only full-time contract faculty are eligible and recipients may not come from the same department two years in a row. Nominations must include: date of nomination, nominee’s name, your name, identification of your position as student, staff, administrator, or faculty and a supporting statement. The Faculty Lecturer Committee asks all faculty to consider recommending a colleague and also to encourage students in your classes to nominate a faculty member who has inspired, encouraged, or offered them special help.

ROBERT “BOB” DINABERG, longtime SBCC football coach and athletic director, was inducted into the California Community College Sports Hall of Fame on March 31 at the COA/CCCAA Convention in Ontario, CA. Bob served as SBCC football coach for 18 years, athletic director for 22 years, and an educator for 33 years. A member of several Halls of Fame, Bob was one of the founding fathers of the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators and served as president. He is also former president of the Western State Conference, California Community College Football Coaches Association, and California Community Colleges Athletic Directors Association.
Ellen O’Connor, SBCC interim athletic director, said “Bob has provided such outstanding leadership to SBCC athletics, as well as state and national organizations. He continues to be of service to our community helping coach youth football as well as serving on the board of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.” She added, “Bob has been a terrific mentor to many, including me, in our department.”
The Commission on Athletics Sports Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed in California community college athletics. Along with Bob, the other three inductees this year are Michael Cooper, Warren Hansen, and Pete Rozelle.
DR. ROBERT “BOB” GRAY has been named to an Honorary Life Membership by the Pacific Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. The award, which is the highest honor offered by the organization, is a statement of appreciation for Dr. Gray’s service to the Pacific Section and to the geological community. He will accept the honor at the PSAAPG’s Annual Meeting on May 28 in Anaheim
DR. DOUG HERSH, Dean of Educational Programs, recently was interviewed regarding his research into solutions for retention for distance learning. His discussion of the Human Presence Learning Environment created with modules within the Moodle community was published in Inside Higher Education on March 29. The topic also was covered by USA Today and Tech Edge in their March 29 editions.
CLINTON INITIATIVE. Four SBCC students from The Student’s Coalition at SBCC, MOLLY WALKER, CORRINE ALBER CHASE, CHRISTY LEE, and RISA HEAD will travel to Miami to present their commitment, A Dialogue for Peace, The Iraq Peace and Reconciliation College Tour at the third annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) Conference in Miami on Fri.-Sun., April 16-18. Established in 2007 by former President Bill Clinton, CGIU seeks to gather young leaders from around the world to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. It is an extension of President Clinton’s Global Initiative. The Student’s Coalition is also working with local film director Mark Manning to launch A Dialogue for Peace, a groundbreaking peace mission designed to create an ongoing dialogue between university students in the U.S. and Iraq. The students will help support this global project by launching it in Santa Barbara and working closely with the director to coordinate events at other college campuses and universities around the country.
EOPS Student Advisor NOEL GOMEZ and current EOPS students involved in the summer Transitions Program were photographed on campus recently for an upcoming article in the May issue of Harvard University Department of Education magazine. The story will focus on the Transitions Program and its importance to education as well as highlight students’ personal stories. Noel is a Harvard alum having earned his master’s degree from the university.
Former EOPS student MAXIMILLIAN RAMIEREZ was featured on the front page of the Wed., April 14 Santa Barbara News Press while attending a UCSB Job Fair. After completing his studies at SBCC, Max transferred to UCSB and will graduate in June with a degree in Computer Engineering. He plans to continue his education in the UCSB Graduate program.
