Important Transportation Update for Start of Spring Semester

January 19, 2018

Dear SBCC Faculty, Staff, and Students,

With the weekend coming up, we wanted to give you an update on current information regarding the continued closure of HWY 101.

Emergency personnel continue to work on the freeway. The current estimate is for the freeway to reopen next week. As of now, there has been no official word on a date or time. While we remain optimistic, we are encouraging you to make alternate transportation plans for Monday, January 22.

Amtrak, Ferry and Car Detour are the available options for travelling to Santa Barbara while the freeway is closed. Amtrak has added additional cars and an additional round-trip to alleviate demand. Condor Express has added tickets to their Monday schedule. Island Packers doesn’t have Monday’s schedule up yet. If you are traveling by car, CHP is recommending drivers take the 46 (not the 166). Thanks to the generosity of the SBCC Foundation, there are resources available to assist with transportation for employees and students.  Visit the Foundation webpage for more information.

We realize that for many of you that live South of the closure, you may be unable to get to campus if Highway 101 remains closed.

If you are unable to attend class due to the closure:

Students - Please notify your instructor ASAP.  The best form of communication is email and messaging within Canvas.

Faculty - Please notify your Department Chair and Dean and arrange a substitute where possible.  Please communicate with your students any plans you have for missed work, etc.

Staff - Please notify your Supervisor.

There is a County press conference planned for today (Friday) at 4 PM. The press conference will be broadcast live on KEYT Channel 3 and KSBY Channel 6. It will also be streamed online at:,,  Santa Barbara County’s YouTube channel (, Santa Barbara County’s Facebook page ( The press conference will also be rebroadcast on radio channel KCSB 91.9 FM at 5 p.m.

The best places to get up-to-date information are through the County of Santa Barbara. You can find information at (including information about road closures), Twitter ( and Facebook ( You do not have to have a Twitter or Facebook account to access these pages.

We will continue to monitor updates throughout the weekend. If new information is made public, we will immediately communicate that to the campus community via pipeline email, social media and Alert U (text "Join SBCC" to 58339 if you are no signed up)

Thank you for your continued patience,
