Information
This class
is an introduction to the theory, concepts and procedures
of sound recording and electronic music production.
Students will learn about and operate sound recording
equipment, synthesizers, samplers, tone generators,
drum machines, recording acoustic instruments, sound
reinforcement, MIDI and computers (music applications).
Students will be required to complete electronic music
projects using the equipment in the studio and their
creative talents.
The course is designed for students of varied musical
and or technical backgrounds. There are no prerequisites
though a background in music is recommended. The class
carries three units of credit, meets for lecture and
in-class demonstration three hours per week, with
individual labs of 1 to 1.5 hours per week. All lab
times are required. Students that complete Music 120A
are expected to also take the follow up course of
Music 120B in the spring semester.

Gabe
Lopez performing his original composition"Waiting."(517K)
Using the Korg M1, Roland drum machine and Vision
sequencing software on the Macintosh, Gabe sequenced
the bass, organ and percussion tracks. He recorded
the guitar tracks on his own guitar and the piano
tracks on the Yamaha MIDI Grand Piano. All tracks
were recorded direct to an Alesis ADAT digital eight
track recorder, and mixed down using a Yamaha 16 channel
mixer, Yamaha SPX90II, and Alesis Quadraverb effects
processors. For the performance, the prerecorded material
was played through the house system while Gabe and
four backup singers peformed vocals live.

Ben performed his piece playing the Yamaha MIDI Grand
Piano live on stage while his orchestral tracks were
played through the house sound system. The orchestral
tracks were produced using the Korg M1 Orchestral
Card and Vision sequencing Software on the Macintosh.
The tracks were recorded using the Alesis ADAT digital
eight track recorder, and mixed down using a Yamaha
16 channel mixer and Yamaha SPX90II effects processor.

"Home" (554K) James performed his piece playing
the Akia EVI wind controller live on stage. For the
introduction (614K), the EVI sound module was
used to trigger chords on a Proteus II Orchestral
Sound Module. Accompanying James were Josephine Brummel
on the Yamaha MIDI Grand Piano triggering a Korg M1,
Anthony Ybarra on electric bass, Dan Christensen on
drums, and Kevin Vasquez on congas.
