Rietz makes first-team All-WSC; Hebda leads conference in aces
After going 4-2 out of the gate, the SBCC men's volleyball team encountered a slew of obstacles over the final seven weeks of the 2009 campaign.
The Vaqueros dealt with personnel matters, family matters and the loss of both setters late in the season. They won just one of their last 11 matches and dropped a pair of five-set heartbreakers in the final week. SBCC (5-12, 1-9) tied for fifth in the Western State Conference.
"I saw a lot of changes that don't show up on the scoreboard," said Melody Parker, the 2008 WSC Coach of the Year. "We showed more maturity as the season went on and our learning curve was big."
Sophomore hitter Tyson Rietz was named first-team All-WSC after posting 221 kills (third-highest in the conference) and Chris Newcomb was a second-team choice. Mark Hebda, a freshman middle blocker from Bishop Diego High, shared the WSC lead in service aces (28) and was eighth in block assists (41).
Jim Wielebnicki had 173 digs and finished seven behind the WSC leader. The freshman libero from Darien, Ill., would have been first if he hadn't been forced to move to setter with three matches remaining.
