Vaqueros fall 2-1 in season debut
Rodriguez scores in first 35 seconds at Sequoias

Danny Rodriguez found the net from 25 yards out just 35 seconds into Friday's season-opening men's soccer game but SBCC couldn't sustain the momentum in a 2-1 loss at Sequoias. Temperatures were in the low 90s in Visalia.
Rodriguez, a sophomore midfielder, picked up two yellow cards and was ejected in the 35th minute, forcing the Vaqueros to play a man down for the final 55 minutes.

"We lost concentration after 15 or 20 minutes," said coach John Sisterson. "Then we got sloppy in the second half and lost our composure."

Sequoias tied the game in the second half on a 40-yard looping shot over the keeper and a defensive breakdown by SBCC.

"We defended poorly on their second goal," said Sisterson. "We tried to catch them offside and it didn't work. Overall, it wasn't a very good performance."

The Vaqueros return to action on Sept. 4 when they take on Santa Ana at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Mt. SAC Tournament in Walnut.

Ryan McGavigan, a freshman forward from England, scored in the 44th minute on an assist from Danny Molineaux. Melvin Yekeh made it 2-0 in the 50th minute by hammering in a corner kick from McGavigan.

"It was a big improvement over last week," said coach John Sisterson, whose team is 0-1-1. "We competed well against a good team."

Sisterson said the Vaqueros made "two errors that cost us two goals" in the final 10 minutes.

SBCC will take on Richland (Texas) in the third-place game on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Sunday, Sept. 6 -- Mt. SAC Tournament: SBCC vs. Richland, Texas, 11 a.m.  Richland 1, SBCC 0   Record: 0-2-1

Richland downs SBCC 1-0

SBCC had several near misses in Sunday's third-place game at the Mt. SAC Tournament and went on to drop a 1-0 decision to Richland, Texas. It marked the first shutout in 23 games for the Vaqueros (0-2-1).
"Melvin Yekeh hit a thunder ball that the goalie didn't see but it glanced off his arm and Memo Garcia had a diving header in the second half that missed by inches," said Vaquero coach John Sisterson. "They had a PK in the 60th minute and (SBCC goalie) Yohna Adrabi made a great save."
Richland found the net off a corner kick in the 65th minute.
"This is a young squad and we're coming along," Sisterson added. "Peter Aguilar (Santa Barbara High) and Arturo Alvarez (Carpinteria High) both played well."

Tuesday, Sept. 15 -- San Bernardino at SBCC, 1 p.m. San Bernardino 2, SBCC 1   Record: 0-3-1

Vaqueros fall 2-1 in home debut

SBCC had numerous scoring opportunities but could only convert one in a 2-1 men's soccer loss to San Bernardino on Tuesday at La Playa Stadium. Saul Diaz scored in the 23rd and 59th minutes to give the Wolverines (4-3-1) a 2-0 lead.
Diego Diaz Duenas slipped a shot inside the right post after taking a pass from Beville Rose in the 79th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1. SBCC fell to 0-3-1 after dropping its home opener.
Freshman Guillermo Gonzalez, a former Carpinteria High star, had a near-miss in the 17th minute and another in the 30th when his leaping header went over the goal.
"We need to communicate more," said Gonzalez. "We've had bad chemistry so far. When we get a chance to finish, we've been getting nervous and we think about it too much."
Ricky Placencia, the Vaqueros' starting goalkeeper on last year's WSC championship squad, will be out at least another month with a finger injury. On Tuesday, goalie Yonha Adrabi may have suffered a broken hand.
"We created a lot of chances in the first half but we just couldn't find the back of the net," said SBCC coach
John Sisterson. "We felt if we got a goal back, we could go on and win the game.
"At times in the second half, I felt we stopped working hard. There's that old saying, 'Hard work beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.' We just didn't work hard enough in the second half."

Tuesday, Sept. 22 -- SBCC at Rio Hondo, Whittier, 4 p.m.  Rio Hondo 2, SBCC 1   Record: 0-4-1

Rio Hondo tops Vaqueros 2-1

Rio Hondo edged SBCC 2-1 in a nonconference men's soccer match on Tuesday in Whittier, dropping the Vaqueros to 0-4-1.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Santa Barbara tied the game in the 52nd minute when Memo Gonzalez worked hard to win the ball in the penalty area and then set up Melvin Yekeh's goal. The Roadrunners (8-1-2), ranked sixth in the state, went ahead 2-1 in the 75th minute on what SBCC coach John Sisterson called "a defensive error."
"It was a very hot day and we played much better in the second half," said Sisterson. "We could have gone up 2-1 or 3-1 right after we scored. Then our heads went down when they scored again."
SBCC will play its second home match on Friday against Taft at 7 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 25 -- Taft at SBCC, 7 p.m.  Taft 3, SBCC 1  Record: 0-5-1

No. 10 Taft rallies to beat Vaqueros 3-1

SBCC's Danny Molineaux broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute Friday night but No. 10 Taft responded with three goals in 22 minutes and went on to beat the Vaqueros 3-1 at La Playa Stadium. Stuart Kirk set up the Vaquero goal with a perfect pass to the cutting Molineaux.
Taft (7-2-1) won its sixth straight game while the Vaqueros (0-5-1) remained winless. SBCC has played a tough schedule with four of its opponents ranked in the state's top 10.
The Vaqueros have lost their top two goalies to injuries. Jose Contreras, a freshman from Carpinteria High, made his second start on Friday night.
"Taft is a good team, I'd be surprised if they don't make the Final Four," said SBCC coach John Sisterson. "It was a battle and this will prepare us well for our conference opener.
"The boys are staying positive. I don't think we were outmatched at all. We're 0-0 in the conference and looking forward to Tuesday."
SBCC travels to L.A. Mission to open its 14-game Western State Conference slate on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 29 -- WSC opener: SBCC at L.A. Mission, 2 p.m.  SBCC 1, Mission 1, tie  Records: 0-5-2, 0-0-1

Vaqueros tie Mission in WSC debut

SYLMAR -- Coach John Sisterson said his team "dominated the majority of the game" Tuesday afternoon but SBCC had to settle for a 1-1 tie in its WSC opener at L.A. Mission. The defending WSC champion Vaqueros are 0-5-2 on the season.
Stuart Kirk, a sophomore from Wales, put the visitors up 1-0 in the 23rd minute on a nice pass from Danny Rodriguez. The Eagles tied it on a penalty kick in the second half.
"The first half was great and the first 20 minutes of the second half were fine," Sisterson noted. "Then the old second-half jinx hit again and we made a defensive error, leading to the PK.
"We had three good scoring opportunities after that with Danny Molineaux missing a 20-yard shot by inches and Stuart having two shots blocked by defenders."

Friday, Oct. 2 -- Oxnard at SBCC, 7:30 p.m.
 SBCC 2, Oxnard 0  Records: 1-5-2, 1-0-1 WSC

Vaqueros blank Oxnard 2-0 for first win

Rodriguez scores against former team

It was a night of firsts for the SBCC on Friday at La Playa Stadium.
The Vaqueros got their first win of the year -- a 2-0 victory over Oxnard -- and freshman Ismael Guzman got his first shutout in his first collegiate start.
Danny Molineaux scored in the second minute after taking a long pass from Sam Nicholson and beating the goalie in a 1-on-1 showdown. Danny Rodriguez, who played for Oxnard last year, made it 2-0 in the 48th minute on a 22-yard free kick from the left side.
"It feels good (to get a win), it's been a while," said Rodriguez. "It was frustrating."
SBCC, the defending WSC champion, improves to 1-5-2 and 1-0-1 in conference.
"It's been a long time coming," said coach John Sisterson. "We felt we were a little unlucky on Tuesday (in a 1-1 tie at L.A. Mission). We were deserved winners tonight. Everything went right and we put away our chances."
Guzman, a Dos Pueblos High product, started the year as the No. 4 goalie but moved into the starting slot when the other three suffered injuries. He had seven saves on Friday.
"I thought he did a great job, he's worked hard this year," said Sisterson.

Tuesday, Oct. 6 -- SBCC at Citrus, Glendora, 2 p.m. SBCC 2, Citrus 0  Records: 2-5-2, 2-0-1

Vaqueros net second straight 2-0 win

Rodriguez scores both goals at Citrus

GLENDORA -- SBCC recorded its second straight 2-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Citrus, thanks to the play of "The Dannys."
Danny Rodriguez put the Vaqueros ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute on a shot from 30 yards out, following a corner kick by Ryan McGavigan. In the 72nd minute, Danny Molineaux was brought down in the box and Rodriguez converted the penalty kick.
SBCC improves to 2-5-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in the Western State Conference.
"It was a good performance, all our guys played well," said coach John Sisterson. "We outshot them 17-7 and held them to one shot in the second half."
It was the second straight shutout for keeper Ismael Guzman and the Vaquero defense.
"Ismael was solid," Sisterson added. "I'm happy with the boys, they're starting to get on track."

Tuesday, Oct. 13 -- Moorpark at SBCC, 7:30 p.m. SBCC 2, Moorpark 1  Records: 4-5-2, 4-0-1 (1st in WSC)

Vaqueros win in dramatic style, 2-1
Jackson scores in 90th minute to beat Moorpark

Lee Jackson scored on a loose ball in the box with less than a minute to play Tuesday night at La Playa Stadium, lifting SBCC to a dramatic 2-1 victory over No. 22 Moorpark in a first-place showdown.
The Vaqueros (4-5-2) posted their fourth straight win on a rainy night to stay atop the WSC race at 4-0-1. The Raiders fell to 5-4-1 and 3-2.
Ryan McGavigan assisted on the winning goal with a corner kick from the right side. The keeper couldn't control the ball and Jackson lofted it back over his head.
"To be honest, I'm not sure what happened," said Jackson, a freshman defender from England. "I just swung my leg and luckily it went in."
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the seventh minute by Fernando Zandarin. In the 45th minute, Stuart Kirk took a pass from Diego Duenas and beat the keeper from 18 yards out to tie it just seconds before halftime.
"In conditions like that, it's not about looking pretty but grinding it out," said coach John Sisterson. "We told them at half to be ready for rebounds around the goal and get there before the defender."
SBCC will host Canyons (4-1), which trails the Vaqueros by a point, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 16 -- Canyons at SBCC, 7:30 p.m.  SBCC 3, Canyons 1  Records: 5-5-1, 5-0-1 (1st in WSC)

  Vaqueros post fifth straight victory

Danny Molineaux scored a hat trick Friday night, leading the resurgent SBCC men's soccer squad to a 3-1 win over Canyons at La Playa Stadium.
It was the fifth straight win for the Vaqueros (5-5-2, 5-0-1), who are 5-0 in October. They took a four-point lead atop the WSC standings with their second win over a second-place team in four days. SBCC, the defending WSC champion, is 18-1-1 in its last 20 conference matches.
Molineaux, a sophomore from England, scored in the sixth, 30th and 65th minutes to give the Vaqueros a 3-0 lead. Stuart Kirk, Memo Gonzalez and Danny Rodriguez picked up the assists.
"They were all very good goals," said coach John Sisterson. "The boys worked hard this week in training and it paid off."
Molineaux had to leave the game in both halves with injuries. "He took a nasty knock in the ribs in the first half," said Sisterson.
The Vaqueros will complete the first round of WSC play on Tuesday at Hancock.

The first-place Vaqueros (6-5-2) posted their sixth straight win and completed the first round of WSC play with a 6-0-1 mark.
Memo Gonzalez scored in the 14th minute for the Vaqueros and that was the only score of the first half. Hancock scored twice in an eight-minute span of the second half and then the visitors missed a penalty kick.
"A lot of teams would have hung their heads but we were determined," said coach John Sisterson. "We managed to come back and win on a difficult, small field."
Lee Jackson evened the score in the 65th minue on an assist from Molineaux. In the 80th minute, Molineaux scored the game-winner on an assist by Ryan McGavigan. Thursday, Oct. 22 -- L.A. Mission at SBCC, 7:30 p.m. SBCC 2, Mission 2, tie  Records: 6-5-3, 6-0-2

Mission ties Vaqueros for 2nd time
Six-game win streak halted by late goal

SBCC couldn't hold leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on Thursday night as L.A. Mission rallied to tie the Vaqueros 2-2 in a WSC match at La Playa Stadium.
The tie ended the Vaqueros' six-game win streak. They're still unbeaten in their last eight (6-0-2) and remained atop the WSC standings with that record. SBCC, ranked No. 8 in Southern California, is 6-5-3 overall while the third-place Eagles, who tied the Vaqueros for the second time this year, are 7-6-2 and 4-2-2.
Kalum Horne opened the scoring in the 44th minute on an assist from Danny Molineaux. After the Eagles tied it in the 54th minute, Sam Nicholson headed in a free kick from Danny Rodriguez nine minutes later to put the Vaqueros ahead 2-1.
Oscar De La Cruz tied it with a goal in the 81st minute.
"I couldn't see a defender and I thought I was offside," said Nicholson after netting his first goal of the year. "Danny found me and I put it in the back of the net.
"On their last goal, we didn't clear it, then they had a mishit and it came off Mikey's (Michael Dowson) head. That was unlucky. This feels like a loss."
SBCC goalie Ismael Guzman made a diving save in the 60th minute and leaped to knock a ball over the crossbar in the 90th.
"The result was very disappointing," said Vaquero coach John Sisterson. "We didn't stamp our authority on the game and we didn't play like we can. You can't do that against a good team like Mission."

Tuesday, Oct. 27 -- SBCC at Oxnard, 4 p.m.  SBCC 0, Oxnard 0, tie  Records: 6-5-4, 6-0-3

Vaqueros post 0-0 tie at Oxnard
SBCC remains unbeaten (6-0-3) in WSC

SBCC didn't score a goal on Tuesday but still came away with a 0-0 tie at Oxnard.
It was the second straight tie for the Vaqueros (6-5-4, 6-0-3), who remained undefeated in WSC North play. They extended their lead over second-place Canyons (6-3-0) to three points (21-18), thanks to Hancock's 4-3 win over Canyons.
"It was a game I felt we could have won, if we'd passed the ball around like I know we can," said coach John Sisterson. "We never really got out of third gear. It was windy and at times, it looked sloppy. But we're still undefeated in league."

Friday, Oct. 30 -- Citrus at SBCC, 7:30 p.m.  SBCC 1, Citrus 0  Records: 7-5-4, 7-0-3

 Nania's goal sparks Vaqueros, 1-0
Short-handed SBCC remains in 1st in WSC

Blake Nania scored his first collegiate goal midway through the first half on Friday night and SBCC held on for a 1-0 victory over Citrus at La Playa Stadium.
Nania, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, took a pass from Kalum Horne in the 23rd minute, dribbled through two defenders and beat the keeper on the left side. No. 19 SBCC (7-5-4, 7-0-3) stayed in first place in the WSC, three points ahead of Canyons, with four games to play.
"They tell to me to get at people when I get it and that's what I did," said Nania. "We played OK in the first half but went downhill in the second. I'm glad I got the game-winning goal because 0-0 would not have been acceptable."
The Vaqueros, who had tied their last two games, were without two key players and started 10 freshmen against the last-place Owls (0-9-1). Danny Rodriguez is sidelined with a separated shoulder while Stuart Kirk will miss a few games with a groin injury.
"Blake's goal was impressive, I think he fell down, then got up and scored," said coach John Sisterson. "He's worked hard and waited for his chances. He's been a sub, then got the start tonight. He's a tricky little fella and I'm delighted he scored the match-winner and got us three points."
It was the second straight shutout for goalie Ismael Guzman and the defense.
The Vaqueros have two home games left -- Tuesday against Glendale at 7 p.m. and Nov. 13 against Hancock.

Tuesday, Nov. 3 -- Glendale at SBCC, 7 p.m. SBCC 6, Glendale 0  Records: 8-5-4, 8-0-3

Molineaux scores twice for 1st-place Vaqueros

Memo Gonzalez racked up a goal and three assists Tuesday night and freshman goalie Ismael Guzman notched his third straight shutout as SBCC routed Glendale 6-0 in a men's soccer match at La Playa Stadium. The Vaqueros (8-5-4, 8-0-3) scored three times in a 17-minute span of the first half to remain unbeaten in conference play.
SBCC extended its lead over second-place Canyons to five points (27-22) with three games to play.
Danny Molineaux found the net in the 21st minute, Kalum Horne scored three minutes later and Molineaux added another goal in the 38th minute. Gonzalez, a freshman from Carpinteria High, assisted on both of Molineaux's goals and also provided the helper on Melvin Yekeh's goal in the 60th minute. Lee Jackson made it 5-0 in the 67th minute with Yekeh picking up the assist and Gonzalez completed the scoring in the 83rd on a penalty kick.
"All the guys played well," said coach John Sisterson. "We had about 95 percent of the possession. We really went about our business and that's what I was hoping for."

Friday, Nov. 6 -- SBCC at Moorpark, 2 p.m.  Moorpark 1, SBCC 0  Records: 8-6-4, 8-1-3

     Moorpark upsets SBCC 1-0
Vaqueros suffer first WSC loss, stay in first place

Moorpark scored a goal in the 65th minute and held on to upset visiting SBCC 1-0 in a WSC match on Friday afternoon.
 I
t was the first WSC loss for the 20th-ranked Vaqueros (8-6-4, 8-1-3), who saw their first-place lead over No. 19 Canyons reduced to two points. SBCC travels to Canyons on Tuesday for a first-place battle at 1 p.m.

The Vaqueros, who've only been shut out three times, are 21-2-3 in their last 26 conference games.

"We started out well but gradually, Moorpark got on top," said coach John Sisterson. "They were up for the physical battle. We were lacking an edge today. We didn't pass the ball well and didn't really test their keeper."

Sisterson praised the defensive efforts of Sam Nicholson.

Tuesday, Nov. 10 -- SBCC at Canyons, 1 p.m.  SBCC 1, Canyons 1, tie  Records: 8-6-5, 8-1-4

   Vaqueros tie Canyons 1-1
Kirk's late goal keeps SBCC in first place

Stuart Kirk took a cross from Danny Rodriguez with eight minutes to play Tuesday afternoon and scored the game-tying goal to keep No. 19 SBCC in first place in the WSC men's soccer race. The Vaqueros (8-6-5, 8-1-4) earned a 1-1 tie at second-place Canyons (11-6-2, 8-3-2) to stay two points ahead with one game to play.

"I thought we were the better team," said coach John Sisterson. "But you have to put away your chances."

No. 20 Canyons took the lead in the 25th minute but SBCC had several solid scoring chances on a pair of free kicks by Rodriguez and a header by Danny Molineaux.

If the Vaqueros beat Hancock on Friday in a 7 p.m. game at La Playa Stadium, they'll clinch their second straight WSC title.

"We control our own destiny, that's the most important thing," said Sisterson.

Friday, Nov. 13 -- Hancock at SBCC, 7 p.m.  SBCC 4, Hancock 0  Records: 9-6-5, 9-1-4 (WSC champions)

Vaqueros earn second straight WSC title
They score three early goals to blank Hancock 4-0

SBCC erupted for three goals in the first 15 minutes on Friday night and claimed its second straight Western State Conference men's soccer title with a 4-0 shutout of Hancock.

Stuart Kirk scored twice in the first 11 minutes for the Vaqueros (9-6-5, 9-1-4) and Lee Jackson added a goal four minutes later to make it 3-0.

"We wanted the win, we didn't want a joint championship (with Canyons)," said Kirk. "We knew if we scored early, it would crush their confidence."

Peter Aguilar, a former Santa Barbara High star, took a pass about seven yards out in the 50th minute, turned and blasted the ball into the upper left corner to make it 4-0. It was the seventh shutout of the year for freshman goalie Ismael Guzman.

The Vaqueros are 22-2-4 in WSC play over the last two years.

"We changed things around, pushing Lee (a defender) higher and that worked," said coach John Sisterson, who didn't arrive until the second half because he was coaching the Vaquero women down at Ventura. "We felt we had to get ahead of them early and go forward. It feels great to win the title again, I'm delighted for the players.

"It's nice to win one but when you win the second one after starting out slowly (0-5-1 in nonconference), it just proves what a good squad we have."

The Southern Cal Regional pairings will be announced Monday. SBCC is currently ranked eighth in Southern Cal and the top eight teams will get home dates in the first round on Nov. 21.

Saturday, Nov. 21 -- Southern Cal Regional, first round: SBCC vs. TBA.
