Perez guides Vaqueros to WSC title
Freshman from SBHS wins seven medalist awards, takes 5th in state
Seven was the magic number for the 2009 SBCC men's golf team as the Vaqueros captured seven tournament titles and freshman Andrew Perez topped the field seven times.
Perez, who won a CIF individual title for Santa Barbara High in 2008, shot a 6-under 66 in his second collegiate round at Rio Bravo CC, leading the Vaqueros to first place in the Bakersfield Invitational. He went on to capture seven medalist awards, including the WSC Tournament, and was named WSC Player of the Year with a 70.3 average.
The Vaqueros went 61-16 and captured the first WSC title in coach Chuck Melendez' nine-year tenure.
Freshman Matt Siporin, the medalist at the North-South Invitational and the Canyons Invitational, was first-team all-conference.
Perez shot 69-72 to win the Southern Cal Regional at Marshallia Ranch in Lompoc and one week later, placed fifth in the State Championships at Roseville. He opened with a 68 and shared the lead in the 36-hole, one-day event before finishing with a 73, missing the top spot by one shot.
After a 6-over-par 366 put the Vaqueros in third place at the midpoint of the State Finals, they ended up eighth. Siporin shot two straight 71s to tie for ninth.
"I'm real proud of this team, we won a lot of big tournaments this year, including the WSC title," said Melendez, who had five freshman in his top six players. "At the State Championships, it was a horse race and we just didn't keep up."
