Friday, Nov. 6 -- Glendale Tournament: SBCC vs. Miramar, 1 p.m. Miramar 82, SBCC 75  Record: 0-1

    Vaqueros drop opener 82-75
Teeguarden scores 20 in game of streaks

Lucky Teeguarden tossed in 20 points and David Lane added 18 for SBCC on Friday but it wasn't enough to prevent an 82-75 season-opening men's basketball loss to Miramar at the Glendale Tournament.
The Jets, the defending Pacific Coast Conference champions, jumped out to a 22-6 lead in a game of streaks. The Vaqueros responded with a 24-8 burst to tie it at 30. Then SBCC put together a 15-3 run to end the half with a 45-33 advantage.

The Vaqueros were up 53-38 with 16:30 to play when Miramar, of San Diego, reeled off 15 straight points to tie it. The game was still tied at 73 with 1:30 remaining before the Jets closed things out with a 9-2 spurt. SBCC shot just 29 percent (9-31) in the second half.

Teeguarden hit 4-of-7 from 3-point land. Daniel Koches had nine points and four rebounds while Willie Reese collected eight points and 13 rebounds.

"Even though we didn't shoot well, we still had chances to win the game," said coach Morris Hodges. "We didn't do a good job on the defensive boards."

Saturday, Nov. 7 -- Glendale Tournament: Third place, SBCC vs. Victor Valley, 1 p.m.  SBCC 75, Victor Valley 70  Record: 1-1

Reese guides Vaqueros to third place
He scores 18 in 75-70 win at Glendale Tourney

Willie Reese scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on Saturday, leading SBCC to a 75-70 triumph over Victor Valley in the third-place game of the Glendale Tournament. Lucky Teeguarden added 14 points and David Lane had 13 for the Vaqueros (1-1), who opened with a 21-11 run and led 47-34 at halftime.

SBCC led 70-61 with 3:55 to play but the Rams pulled within two, 72-70, with 42 seconds left. Reese, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, had two key defensive rebounds and hit 3-4 free throws in the final 25 seconds.

Reese canned 10 of 11 free throws in the game.

“We played better than we did on Friday,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We rebounded better and our offense was much better in the first half. We had another lull in the second half where they came back and we need to work on that.”

Friday, Nov. 20 -- SBCC at Southwestern, Chula Vista, 5 p.m.  Southwestern 102, SBCC 80  Record: 1-2

   Vaqueros can't overcome slow start
Lane scores 24 in 102-80 loss at Southwestern

Turnovers and cold shooting led to a 16-point halftime deficit on Friday and SBCC never recovered in a 102-80 nonconference loss at Southwestern.

David Lane scored 24 points for the Vaqueros (1-2), who fell behind 47-31 at intermission after commiting 17 turnovers and shooting 39.4 percent (13-33) in the first 20 minutes at Chula Vista. Daniel Koches had 14 points, Lucky Teeguarden scored 12 and Willie Reese grabbed six rebounds.

"We dug ourselves a hole by not taking care of the basketball," said coach Morris Hodges, whose team was playing its first game in 13 days. "We got it down to nine with about eight minutes left but never got any closer."

Saturday, Nov. 21 -- SBCC at Palomar, San Marcos, 3 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 27 -- Condor Classic at Oxnard: SBCC vs. San Bernardino Valley, 3 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 28 -- Condor Classic: SBCC vs. L.A. Harbor or Ventura, 1 or 5 p.m.
