has been at SBCC since 1989, serving as program Director from 1994-2003.
He received his A.S. degree in Underwater Technology from Florida
Institute of Technology, B.S. in Vocational Education
at California State University and
an M.A. in Educational Technology from
Pepperdine
University.
Don has been working in the marine technology
industry for over 28 years. Before coming to work at SBCC, he worked
as a submarine/ADS/ROV pilot and diver for several commercial diving
corporations and as Pacific Division Manager of International Underwater
Contractors, Inc.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors
of The Association of Commercial Diving Educators, Inc. (ACDE.)
He is an active status Course Director/Instructor Trainer with
the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), The
International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD)
and Divers Alert Network (DAN). Don is also a member of NAUI's Technical Diving Advisory Board.
Don is the author of "Fundamentals of Underwater and Marine Equipment " a
manual which has been published for use in the Marine Technology
program.
In 2008, SBCC selected Don as the Annual Faculty Lecturer which is SBCC's highest honor.
The criteria for selection to deliver the lecture are outstanding classroom teaching, counseling, or librarianship, and unselfish, dedicated faculty service to Santa Barbara City College. Barthelmess has the distinction of being the first faculty lecturer in the 29-year history of the award to represent a career technical education discipline.
