Application Procedure for Diving Classes

To insure that your application is processed completely you must contact Judy Lough @ 805-965-0581, x2426 at least two weeks prior to the swim evaluation scheduled on August 20, 2008 during MDT 101.

If you have not contacted the department, and if your application has not been received at this time, you will not be accepted to the program. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Students who desire to enroll in diving classes offered at Santa Barbara City College need to qualify and inform the department of their desire to do so via the Application for Diving & Hyperbaric Exposure. Once this is completed, a student file will be established within the department and you will be notified of your application status by the department. There are no waiting lists to attend the Marine Tech. Program!

Students who have decided that they wish to become certified as a commercial diver must also complete a comprehensive physical exam prior to acceptance to the program.

  1. Obtain, complete and submit enrollment application to SBCC Admissions or click here to apply online or download the pdf application.
  2. Obtain, complete and submit Application for Diving & Hyperbaric Exposure, (yellow form) along with $50.00 application fee payable to The Marine Technology Department.
  3. Submit a copy of your Dive Certification card to the Marine Technology Department.
  4. Complete the physical exam using the Commercial Diving Physician's Examination Report form prior to taking the swim evaluation which is scheduled prior to the start of the semester. Physical exam form must be completed in its entirety including all of the necessary lab reports, etc.
  5. Mail the documents from step 2,3 and 4 to the SBCC Marine Technology Department: SBCC MDT 721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, CA 93109. These documents do not need to be mailed in all together. You can mail in your application fee and SCUBA certification and the physical exam must be received in our office prior to the swim test.
  6. Upon receipt of your application to the MDT department, you will will receive written or oral confirmation from the department. If you have any questions about the above information, you can reach Judy Lough at 805-965-0581 x 2426.
  7. Register for Marine Technology Classes and complete the MDT 101 Information module on campus.

Application Procedure for Non-Diving
Marine Technology Classes

Many students attend classes offered at SBCC and Marine Technology for professional skill upgrades, re-certification, personal enrichment, life-long learning. We recognize and offer open enrollment to these persons who need access to certain portions of our Marine Technology training that are not related to diving.

  1. Obtain, complete and submit enrollment application to SBCC Admissions or click here to apply online or download the pdf application.
  2. Upon receipt of SBCC Admissions Application, the Admissions Office will mail you an appointment card to register for SBCC classes.
  3. If you are seeking a degree, contact SBCC Counseling ext. 2285 for assessment information or the Occupational Program Advisor at ext. 2854.

NOTICE OF PHYSICAL EXAM REQUIREMENTS – All trainees who desire to participate in Openwater diving are required to complete and submit the COMMERCIAL DIVING PHYSICIAN’S EXAMINATION REPORT FORM as required by the Association of Commercial Diving Educators for training and subsequent qualification/certification as a Commercial Diver in accordance with ANSI/ACDE-01-1998 Commercial Diver Training Minimum Standard- and the Association of Diving Contractors (ADC).

Trainees must have a qualified licensed physician’s clearance to dive prior to beginning training in openwater diving. The examination is valid for one year from the date of completion and is accepted by most employers. This examination is not required non-diving classes.

All divers are required to have a current Medical History Record on file with the Department (part of the Application for Diving and Hyperbaric Exposure) which documents that the participants are free from medical contraindications to diving.

NOTICE OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY – Santa Barbara City College and the Marine Technology Department is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy work and training environment and is dedicated to providing a drug and alcohol-free workplace. Safety is of paramount importance to our program. The Marine Technology department’s substance abuse and prevention policy incorporates provisions for illicit drug testing. An industry standard drug screen is a required part of the SBCC DIVING PHYSICIAN’S EXAMINATION REPORT FORM in accordance with industry protocol.

The goals and objectives of maintaining safety in drug-free work environments are attainable through cooperation at every level and by explicitly and forcefully prohibiting the use, manufacture, distribution, dispensation, and possession of illicit drugs, drug paraphernalia, and alcohol at all our training locations and diving operations under the auspices of the Marine Technology Department.
