Expectations 2 -- Mary Gibson

Encouragement to participate in the field of study

Encouragement to participate in Theatre Arts productions as a way of testing out a career choice ( if theatre is their major). Other majors can be encouraged to participate by volunteering in their chosen field. This is the best way for students to find out if the expectations that they have for themselves are realistic and desirable.

Description of activity or assignment

Give information about how students may get involved in activities related to their major. Emphasize that first-hand experience is the best way that they can "test" whether the field they have chosen is a good one for them and whether their expectations are realistic.

Materials needed

Flyers or brochures detailing how students can participate. Contact persons at an organization are especially helpful.

Procedure and time needed

Include on the syllabus, information about how students may get involved in activities related to their major. If there are opportunities within the department (this is the case in Theatre) no extra time may be required other than 5-10 minutes giving the information and emphasizing the importance of participation.

If the opportunities are not on campus, you may have to spend time searching the community resources for them.

Connection to campus resources if applicable
