Ask students to state academic goal

First-day class questionnaire asks them to state their academic goal. This lets me know whether they have made a commitment and expect to earn a degree or are still searching for a direction. It also helps me to group students by interest for some co-operative learning activities.

 

Description of activity or assignment

On the first day of class I have students complete a questionnaire which asks what their academic goal is.

 

Materials needed

Questionnaire with space for desired information including what their major is and what their academic goal is. (see example)

 

Procedure and time needed

I hand the questionnaire out on the first day of class and collect it before they leave. I leave 15-20 minutes at the end of the first session for them to complete the questionnaire.
