TEXTBOOK COMPREHENSION
This activity helps students maximize their comprehension of their textbook.
Description of activity
(From Gail Tennen's "Faculty Guide to Increasing Student Success in Social Science Classes" p. ??) Early in the semester, go over the organization and helpful features of the textbook. Point out the arrangement of chapters and which ones you plan to cover. Point out the study questions, chapter previews and/or summaries, useful charts, glossary and index.
Reinforce these features of the text throughout the semester. For example, instead of telling students to turn to page 124, ask them to look up a the relevant concept in the Index and find the correct page to turn to. For a chart that they need to refer to often, have them write the page number on the inside cover for quick reference.
